Default Yamaha G1 clutch

Not sure if I have a problem or not, but it seems my drive belt may be too tight. Maybe it's supposed to work the way it is, but there is no play in the belt. As soon as the starter starts turning it moves the cart. Should there be a point in which the engine runs, but the cart does not? I notice if I am going downhill with my foot off the gas the engine continues to turn and when I try to go again it is obviously flooded I'm guessing due to the fuel pump continuing to pump fuel due to the engine turning. Just takes a few seconds to get going smooth again.

If there is supposed to be some slack in the belt how do you adjust it?

Thanks in advance.

Looking back on your build thread, you have an older style (4-weight) clutch. Yes, G1's had tight belts (sometimes a pain just to get off), it was pretty much, push the pedal and start moveing. The original clutch's had a spring (to return it to the open position), when you had the engine apart, did you grease the floating shaft bushing? Was the spring there? It's not a hard clutch to work with, remove fuel tank, bend lock tab bracket out of the way, remove the bolt (counter clockwise), remove the outer cover, remove circlip and washer, the floating flange will slide off the fixed sheave (you wont need to pull the fixed sheave), clean and inspect the parts.

Got it done. You were absolutely correct. The cart runs way different now. Starts better, takes off better and the top speed is way better.

I'll post some pics just in case anybody wonders what the inside of these look like. I was apprehensive about working on the clutch, but there is not much to them.

Here is where I started.

Here is the inside of the front cover. I see now why it's called a 4 wieght

And this is where the problem was. The shaft was actually sticky with old grease and dirt and wouldn't let the clutch move in and out.

So basically I just cleaned all the old grease off of it with steel wool and WD-40, re-greased it and polished all the parts while I had it apart. Unbelievable difference in the way it runs.

Thanks again smallblock450sl!!

Glad it worked out. Now, do you want to take the seconday clutch apart and clean and grease it also? Or did you already do it?

Find a washer or shim to put behind that spring, maybe try 1/8", and see how it takes off then. We used to use hog rings from hardware store and sometimes certain pipe you can cut and use. Make sure you use something like chain lube or superlube on the weights; on the pins they move on, just a little.

Sometimes you can clean/lube the secondary through the spring if its not that bad. I use spray can lithium grease on it after cleaning it.

I finally got around to trying to clean up the secondary clutch. Is there a trick to getting the outside sheave off? I removed the cotter pin and nut from the outside and assumed it would slide off, but it's frozen on there. I tried tapping around the edges with a hammer, but nothing. Is there something I'm missing?

Your not missing anything. That fixed sheave has probably never been taken off, it's just "frozen/rusted" on and there is also a woodruff key that "locks" it in position on the input shaft. The fixed sheave will have 2 6mm threaded holes in it. You can use a common 3 sided puller and 2 bolts and washers, but be "VERY" carefull to alighn the puller bolt to lighn up with the input shaft, if you damage the threads/input shaft Use some good penetrating oil (overnight) and maybe even some heat from a propane tourch. Once you get it apart, show some pix's for recomondations for parts needed. Would be very cool to upgrade or fab a zerk fitting to allow greasing without taking apart. Let us know what happens. Later Dave
