g9 keeps running
The starter generator keeps running on my g9 even with the key off. I have to disconnect the batt, does this mean the starter switch is bad or could it be the starter generator?

Re: g9 keeps running
that's strange it still turns with key off i have seen them run when key is turned on and the switch under the gas pedal was bad or stuck. not really sure on your problem.

Re: g9 keeps running
Does it start running again when you reconnect the battery cable?
If it does tap on the solenoid with a hammer handle, might be sticking. |

Re: g9 keeps running
Like GP said, could be a stuck "stop switch". Like Crash said, could be a stuck "solenoid". You should be able to check them with a volt meter on continuity. But....because it's a G9, I have seen a couple that this symptom was caused by a bad "automatic voltage regulator" I know it sounds crazy but true. Try the switch and solenoid first.

Re: g9 keeps running
Disconnect one of the small wires from the solenoid and try connecting the battery. If the starter/generator starts turning, the solenoid is stuck closed.
If nothing happens, check the red/white wire at the solenoid for battery voltage. With the key switch off, and the run/stop switch under the accelerator pedal open, there should be 0 volts. Here's a schematic for you. Hope it helps! |

Re: g9 keeps running
Before you spend a lot of time trying things try this simple test. With the engine running and the key switch off try disconnecting the voltage regulator. A bad voltage regulator can cause a ground loop to the starter solenoid that keeps it active. It is and easy test with out unbolting anything. If the starter stops turning you have found your problem.

Re: g9 keeps running
Hey i was just searching back through the forums and found this. I think this was my original problem. It created the ground loop back through the black wire that's going to the pickup and only partially melted so i think the timing for the spark was off. I replaced the plug, rebuilt the carb, tightened up the valve lash (glad i did because i found the top end was dry), but then i ran a new ground wire to the block and it started up and ran fine until IT happened again. I thought the pedal was stuck, but it wasn't turned off the key, and it kept trying to start and melted the new 12ga wire i ran from the ground on the battery to the engine block.
I'll be unplugging the voltage regulator tomorrow and probably ordering one online tomorrow night! Anyone have any idea what makes these go out? Are these electrical systems sensitive like Seadoo's where you really need to pull the ground wire if you hookup a battery charger to the battery? |

I know this is an old thread, but I'm having the same problem as the original poster. The only difference is that since my engine rebuild, I can not get it to start. It turns over, but when I release the pedal, the starter/generator keeps running. I tested the pedal switch and it passed, replaced the ignition coil, but no difference. So, I disconnected the voltage regulator as suggested and the starter stops. When I press on the pedal, the starter will engage and quit when I release with the voltage with the regulator disconnected. Am I correct in now assuming the voltage regulator is bad and is my problem? If so, would a bad voltage regulator cause a no start condition? I have spark, 160 psi compression, I'm 99.999% sure timing is correct, it's getting gas, and valves are set at .004, but no start. Thanks in advance for the help. |

Re: g9 keeps running
Is the starter turning the motor in the correct rotation? Counter clock wise.
