Question G1 running hot

My G1 seems to be running hot. After traveling about 1 mile last night (from point A to point B w/o stopping) at 3/4 throttle (my throttle cable is bit short ), it seems to lack a little bit in power, and it starts to smell and feel hot when I place my hand on the front of the engine cover.

It was fine before I added a new muffler. The muffler is a modified throatier G1 muffler from Plowmans. It has larger tubes, but the muffler is the same size; I don’t know what’s inside it.

I wonder if the engine could be oil-starved. I was careful to attach the tube/hose from the new exhaust to the oil pump, but the steel tube that screws into the exhaust has a small amount of play in it (the exhaust sensor tube). Plowmans said that was normal. If that tube or sensor fails, will the oil pump still pump oil?

Anyway, I was thinking about adding some cooling features to the cart, but then I thought, gee – I’m just treating the symptom and not the cause. I need to figure out why my engine is getting hot. Any diagnostic ideas are greatly appreciated.

Check your cooling system first. Are all the fan shrouds in place? Fan intake covered with debris? Pull the shrouds and check for debris blocking airflow from the fan to the cylinder and around the cooling fins. Mouse nests are a common problem causing overheating and engine damage.

I'll do that - check my shrouds and cooling fins. I also read some info on other threads hear about how to check if the oil pump is putting out. I'll try that too since it seems simple.
