G22 no power uphill
I am a new golf cart owner so please excuse the ignorance. I just purchased a gas G22. It runs great on paved, level roads, but is very sluggish going uphill. Had a friend riding the other day, who is a pretty big guy, and he even had to jump out to keep us going. I live in the mountains, so we are talking about pretty steep hills.
Thanks for the help. |

Re: G22 no power uphill
Need to check out the clutches and make sure your engine mounts are not broken. If the engine moves or a clutch is not shifting or even very dirty/not greased in forever....it will act just like you say because it is not shifting. I would grease the clutches first they have a grease zerk, but don't put much in just 1-2 pumps on a gun. See if that helps you should be able to move the engine clutch by hand to see if it moves. If not then take the cover off the engine clutch and see if anything is broken in there. Pretty sure they have rollers in those and they do go bad on occasion. Also make sure the belt is over 1" wide, too much wear will lose power also. Look at the back of the rear clutch and the little ramps there, they should be smooth and the plastic parts that slide up them in good condition.

Re: G22 no power uphill
Thanks, I will check that out. I know the belt was replaced when I bought it and it is over 1" wide. It is very loose, though. From some of the other posts, I believe the drive belt is supposed to be loose.

Re: G22 no power uphill
It should be loose enough so at rest when it is at top of secondary, the primary can turn to let the engine idle without moving the cart. But if the clutch is dirty/damaged sometimes it does not open all the way either...these have no spring in them so if they don't work easily they wont open when you stop.
Note that if your mounts are bad they might only move when torque is applied under load. If the engine is moved towards trans, the belt will be more loose and engage too far up the primary; causing it to take off in a higher gear much like your car starting in 2nd. |
