Default G2 runs good without airbox.

'Granpa's cart', ( purchased from a dealer) in great condition, and ran great until recently. Needed to use choke to get much past idle, or under a load ( slight hill for example). After checking fuel pump; flow seems adequate (for an 8hp engine) and air filter looks good ( new in July '10). Removed airbox and she seems to run well. A different type of filter maybe? So far as I can tell, everything is stock except a cargo box and a couple of mirrors. At least for now . . .
After reading other posts with similar problems, I checked the clutch and all looks good; very good for 25 yrs old. Thanks in advance ~

J you are describing conflicting actions
needing choke is lean
removing air box makes it leaner?????

Thanks for the quick response. That's why I'm asking, 'cause it seems to be a case of 'two wrongs making it right ? ?' It's always possible something got bumped/moved in removing the sediment bowl, or a fuel line, and now I've added another variable. When it stops raining here I'll give it a better trial.

Ok you had to choke it
you cleaned the carb
now it runs better without the air box

I would pull the carb and check for crud in the needle and seat
or a bent float level.

we can do more better when we have all the facts.

Airbox's on G2/G9/G8's are a strange breed...if any parts are missing, if the straps are missing or bad, if the lid seal is bad and if the lid is warped.....it will not seal correctly and will give you the exact symptom's you describe. Please don't ask me why.....Just trust me.

Thanks for the input. 1 of the 4 rubber straps was intact. Now it has a 36" zip -tie holding it together; holds nice, but kind of a bear to work into place. It appears to be the source of the problem, and I'll look into further refreshing the gaskets, and properly attaching cover to box.

Yes, with correct information it would be a lot easier to diagnose! and this one I can't blame on a computer . . .
Thank you,

The weather has improved, and though it's chilly out, it's also dry! Cart doing well. Many thanks to Doomsman and Smallblock450sl for the help. Happy and safe New Year to all.
