Default G8-Is it running correctly?

Guys, After this cart sat with the previous owner for over two years, I finally got it running again. Here is what I've done:

Cleaned carb three times. Finally found dirt in the screw which holds the float.
Put on new paper and foam air filter.
Replaced the rubber hold down thingy's on the air box so its tight.
Put in new sparkplug and properly gapped.
Checked compression - constant 165 psi every check.
Put in new deep cycle battery.
Put new brushes in starter.
Eliminated all the extra wires - IE: stereo, lights, brake lights, etc...
Have good ground and positive to solenoid.
Changed motor oil (10w-30)
Changed rear end oil = 90W
Bypassed gov - throttle cable goes directly to carb.
Belts look OK, but I don't know extactly what "good" means...

The cart starts, but stumbles a little bit. I drove it yesterday. Granted it was like 28 degrees and maybe that had something to do with it. But I guess I expected more power and speed from the cart. I didn't gps it yet, but I think it wouldn't go more than 12-13 mph. Compared to carts I've driven at the golf course this one seems really slow. It also backfires when you let off the gas. I don't think it smokes - at least can't see anything coming out the back. I put a lift on it and swapped out the stock tires for 20-10-8's all the way around. Should the larger tire make it slow?

Am I expecting too much from a 91' G8?

I guess the only thing I haven't done is changed the drive belt. How much are these? Where is the best place for the best price on them? How do I know this is the issue?

Thanks!

if its that slow then yes you still have a problem. did you check all your vacume lines? fuel filter? are you getting good spark? just askin because that does seem a bit slow

OK, so there is a vacume line out of the head, going to the air filter. Another one which routes to the back lower portion of the engine and the last one tees with one which goes down the side and the other side runs to the pump, which seems fine.

There isn't a fuel filter on it, (which I need to add), but I cleaned the tank well and has fresh fuel (regular gas 85 octain).

Spark is nice and bright.

The throttle cable could use a hair more tightening as I don't have full open throttle, but I was a bit afraid of max'ing it as the gov is by-passed.

I have a G1 so i dont know the vacume set up on a G8 but maybe some others will chime in here soon. I wouldnt worry about the throttle cable yet because if its sputtering some then its just not running right. if you said that it was running fine but not maxing out then i would say mess with the throttle cable. I had a problem on my cart where the vacume line had a one way valve in it (inside the tube) and it had gotten turned sideways. It took me FOREVER to find that as being the problem but when i did it fixed everything. so you might want to just take it all apart and take your time checking everything out

Jim, eventually you will want to replace all that rubber tubing. The line coming out of the back of the valve cover, and running down the back of the motor, is the oil supply line to the rocker galley. Suppling oil the top end of the motor. The line coming out from under the front of the motor, is vacuum, ( fuel pump etc.). There is a check valve in the larger diameter rubber hose, coming off the passenger side of the valve cover. Need to find out if it is clean, working and installed correctly. And I can't remember which way its suppose to be installed. Sorry, Mike

Would vacume lines have anything to do with backfiring as it comes down a hill? (letting off the gas)

That sounds like your throttle cable is not closing the carb butterfly completely......

Make sure your sure the butterfly linkage on the carburetor is opening and closing all the way. If it does not close all the way your car will backfire. The ratio of pull on the accelerator pedal to the throttle linkage on the carburtor is not even with a direct throttle. It will not open and close fully unless you compensate with an accelerator pedal adjustment.

I understand what your saying. You can't get full throttle with the cable, unless you back it off. Then, it won't close the butterfly all the way if you have full throttle...makes sense.

Hmm. So, maybe putting the original cable back on the gov and run the accelerator cable back to the gov might fix it?
