G9A Governor Bypass, still no top speed increase
First post, been following forum for a while. Thanks for all the help over the years. I followed the instructions in the sticky for Yamaha governor bypass. Throttle opens and closes completely and cart runs normal no hesitation. Still only getting 12 mph top speed. Cart is a G9A with jakes lift and 22 inch tires. Did I miss a step? Everyone reports noticeable speed increases with this modification and I am not seeing any change. Will post pics of cart, now that it has a nice paint job and I'm proud of it. Thanks for any advice on this.

The only thing I can tell ya is, check the articulation of the clutches. Would they need to be greased? Only one pump if they do.
Want to see pictures tho. |

Will try and get pics of the governor, etc. This cart did sit for awhile before I got it. Will try and grease the clutch this weekend and get back to you. I did install a torque spring, so will take pics of that install as well so can be sure I did that right too. Thanks for all the help.

I included one from before the paint job. I know these don't show the governor, those are still to come.

Looks good JW.
You should read the whole Yamaha site, learn to do all maintenance and service on the car. It will love you for that. Enjoy, Mike |

Re: G9A Governor Bypass, still no top speed increase
This could be a few things: weak or bad drive clutch (front), rear clutch sheaves not separating and seized not allowing the belt to travel down, or rear clutch sheaves have no tention on the belt and the belt is riding on the shaft. It could also be the engine tention is gone and the engine is pulling back to far as well and not allowing any tention on the belt.
Jack the rear of the cart up, use safety stand, put the cart in neutral, run it and watch the clutches. Make sure the belt on the drive clutch (front) goes up while the belt on the driven clutch (rear) goes down. If this doesn't happen, then check what I posted above. |

Re: G9A Governor Bypass, still no top speed increase
If you put it in neutral or jack it up, it should act like this:
The tension cable on a G9 is under the generator pulley, if broke or really loose you lose pulling power at low speeds however if a motor mount is broken too it may bog badly. If the primary clutch on the engine has a problem (somewhat common) it will rev the engine but go low speeds. The torque kit spring in the secondary can lose you speed too but not that much it should still run 25gps or something. Mine runs 30gps mph on pavement with 15psi in the rear tires, 22s, engine just a screaming lol. It only runs 28 on dirt/gravel, both on level ground. Mostly all I did that would affect speed is remove the silencer on the side of the airbox, clean and lube the clutches, new belts, and I sat the tension cable with my gps I tightened it up until it lost top speed then losen until it came back. Gives pretty good takeoff and did some other mods to clutches for better pulling but nothing for top end. It should shift like that running under load too but you need to pull the rear body to see it I'm not going to recommend you try to run with the seat up....the rear body comes off easily. How high is the engine rpm at max speed? If its high its not shifting take cover off primary and look for broken weights/links, if not clean and lube it and clean any extra lube it can get on the belt. What did you do to the governor? Drill the arm out? You can test its action by sticking something in the throttle at the carb to hold it open, or clamp it open. The cart will run wide open but still shut off with pedal so be careful. Take one run if your governor is working the cart will go much faster. Also check the clutches, if they get really worn from dirt/dust it will dish the sheaves (the aluminum halves) out from belt wear. Eventually it will wear through the sheaves and they will not shift right because the angle is not right, plus if it gets holes in it they tear the belt up. You have to rebuild or replace clutches. With a whole 9hp it is real important the clutches are working properly, imagine driving your car around in 2nd gear only. If the clutches are working right there is something wrong with the engine making it lose power or the brakes are dragging/etc. |

Also check the nylon buttons that ride on the helix
in the secondary clutch. |

Quote:
If you have the cover off the primary you can pump until you see it come out the center, the secondary you can usually see it inside the spring. Yeah good call on the buttons I forgot, the ramps need to be smooth so the sheave can slide up/down them to shift. You can't lube them or they attract dirt. I have put silicone on them, it reacts to the throttle faster it seemed. Sleds use rollers there when they want to get serious, then you can run compound angles on them too. That is one thing I did to mine I cut the ends back a little so at low speed it has more angle. That alone let me pull my boat out of the lake. |
