Question '98 G16 -AS blowing oil

Past summer my dad picked up a reconditioned cart, after several months, he had checked oil, noticed it was a bit low so added up to fill guide. He then started smoking bad and has smoked ever since!! Yes it was in the right location......I've looked it over but cant really see too much....any ideas where and what to look at?
I am pretty sure its a yamaha, but not sure of model although the engine and all components were brand new.

He also had a few issues with switching from reverse to forward and not going anywhere.....I was assuming it was dirt and grime on and around the clutch assembly seeing they run it up and down their dirt roads all summer long....??
Attached pic of cart if it helps???

Just found out it is a 1998 Yamaha G-16-AS

How much has it been used after adding oil?
How low did the oil get before adding oil?
Have you pulled the spark plug to see what it looks like?
oh, should have ask,the smoke is coming from the EXHAUST?

They continued to use it regularly, but with snow they use the sleds now.
I am not sure how low, but it must have been down pretty far....
yes it is from the exhaust!!
I checked the level myself and its right up where it should be!
When they start it up it smokes and after it warms up a little it tapers off, but still the back swirl from going down the road will choke you out with the top on.
The plug seemed fine from what I saw?

Rob, the cart looks like it has been lifted and if so are you reading full on the dipstick? If reading full you need to drain and add only 1 quart then put a mark on the dipstick with the new oil level. After lifting these carts it changes the engine angle and throws the oil level off.

Rob, check the air filter box and see if it has oil in it. If so, it could be a couple of things. Make sure the oil doesn't smell like gas also. You may just have a problem with the float in the carb or fuel pump actually dumping a little fuel into the oil and it blowing up into the air filter box and causing it to smoke. Usually the crankcase will show overfull on the oil level so this might not be your problem but I thought I would throw it there. I had this problem with my 99. It smoked like a freighttrain until I corrected it (dirty fuel pump and carb bowl had some trash).

It may end up you have worn or bad rings. Might want to check compression.

The problem switching from forward to reverse could be seized shifter cables. Spray them really well at the shifter under the seat and back on the trans/axle just behind the engine area.

Keep us posted and let us know anything else you notice going on and we'll try to get you fixed up.

Things I would do.
Service cart, change oil, make sure to put the correct amount of oil in per manufacturer ,air filter, spark plug, check PCV(crank case vent )
check the plug, if your smoking that much your plug should be covered with oil. Look down in the plug hole for any marks on top of piston or cylinder wall check compression, if its low there are ways to find out if its top end or bottom end.
good luck

Question Re: '98 G16 -AS blowing oil

Pulled plug..it was all clumped up with oil and hard scale...oil in the air box also, and breather tube is free and clear....
trying to see inside cylinder, kind of hard to see..
Oil was also spilled all over top side where plug goes in and around base of valve cover??
Kind of explains smoke...didn't smell like gas in oil...and the level was fine in cart.....will drain oil to check further
What next??
