Default G1 not running right

Ok I have been reading through the threads and have found tons of info but im not really sure where to start.

So basically when I got it an it was running rough when I hit the throttle it would just sit cranking the engine for like 5 - 10 sec then start to putt then go Em ran it like that for like an hour just ******* around getting a feel for it I found it also starts to putt and die when it its full throt for a long time (like on the road).

So after it was sitting for a while (like 10min) it wouldn't start at all, it will run on starter spray but once it burns that off nothing Any way after replacing the fuel filter and checking the fuel pump I decided to mess with the fuel mixture and it was back to what it was doing in the beginning.

crankcase seals?
Carb needs to be cleaned?

Thanks for the help, I might have time to take a look at it tomorrow what should I check?

Check fuel filter, possible trash inside fuel pump, clean carb. 2 adjustments. the one closest to engine, gently close shut the back out 1 3/4 turns. Idle adjustment. Lossen and then turn down until the butterfly just opens. This slight opening will keep it from backfiring. Fuel pump is most likely the problem. Also, due to the age of G1's, I suggest not using the oil tank and just mix the fuel in a 48-1 ratio. Flushing fuel through the fuel pump at low pressure sometimes will remove debris. 3-5 pounds psi I use an oil squirt can with stp fuel injector cleaner.

Thanks for the advice, the filter is new and I pulled the tube off the carb and it seems to have an ok flow of fuel (although I have no idea what the proper flow would look like) I was wondering about mixing the oil so that answers one of my questions.

I will play around with the adjustments again still looking for more things to check while im out in the cold

Is there a way I can check the crank case seals with out pulling the engine apart

Seals tend to like the choke a lot to get it started. Look for oil seeping out of the seals at crank. Get it idling and spray the seals with wd40/etc and see if speed changes. You are actually supposed to set the idle on G1, they should idle long as the pedal switch is on but no throttle at carb, a slow idle but faster than the starter. It should not take off on its own. Make sure the front of carb is clean so it does not slip and turn in the cylinder boot, that messes up the carb linkage.

If you take the fuel line off carb it should puke fuel every engine revolution. If so the pump is ok, the carb must be dirty....assuming its not the engine. The carb will have the same problem no matter how long it runs once its warmed up. 2 strokes will lose power and die when hot if the compression is low...its worn out and needs a bore job. The muffler can plug on these too, but usually will burn out. If you run them on the floor for 20 min or so they will smoke a LOT blue smoke just keep running it until it stops. Some get too old and it will not burn out though. Also seem them where I shoved something up the exhaust and broke out carbon then it ran better. They are gutless and muted sounding with a plugged muffler. Make sure the exhaust valve is open if it has one. Oh yeah make sure it did not suck dirt into the fan a lot and plug the cooling fins up, that will make it run hot for sure.

The exhaust on it is a pipe and a ricer fart can from a car, the original owner did it and its on the list of things to replace. Could it be causing problems? its pretty much a straight pipe

I will get some more pics and info tomorrow

It really should have an expansion chamber on it, but you can use another one. Some use one of the banshee pipes with some porting in the engine. A bravo pipe would work but likely need modding to fit. Plowmans might have a new one but they are not cheap.

I was looking at a muffler at tractor supply, its just a simple flow through muffler looks to be the right scale

Something like this

A 2 stroke has a tuned pipe for that engine that makes it run better. Only really ancient 2 strokes don't, or specialized ones like outboards that cover a very wide powerband. So it will run without one, but not as well. Otherwise sure you can put about anything on it, just remember its something like 10HP you don't need that much flow a little restriction might help it. More flow will help top end more.

I sell mufflers for G1's and they are expensive. $210.
