Default Running G9 without balancer?

I have a G9A engine apart, it was knocking and burning oil. I noticed that the hole that the balancer assembly sits in is terribly worn. I suspect this is what the knocking sound was. If I put this back together the way it is, the wear is just going to continue and I'm thinking it could cause bigger problems later.

My question is, has anyone ever run one of these without the balancer? How is the noise and vibration if you have?

If anyone has run into this problem and fixed it with a sleeve or bushing, please let me know.

Thanks

My engine had the balancer removed when I bought it.
Runs fine, however the gov and limiter are still hooked
up and 1/2 mile is the most I run wide open.

Like Dooms, there are others here who are very knowledgeable that have run that motor without one. I would just be careful not to over rev it, it must be there for a reason..... and no, there is no easy fix, those journals are just machined into the case. I guess one could overbore and find a bearing that fits? Lot of work.

Thanks Flintrock, I'm thinking that we should just try to run it without the balancer. To bore it and add a bearing, thats just too much work for this ol' thing.

People have told me its just for vibration to the user, it actually takes power to run, and the engine could care less if its there. They take them out of lawn engines all the time they just vibrate more. But yes it is a problem and no easy fix, it will knock. I'll sell you my quiet engine once I get the clone in there....

I talked to a guy who builds big honkin hondas for racing 50hp+. He takes the balancer out and doesn't even rebalance the engines,He didn't say what rpm he runs but says well over 5 grand. He did tell me what he did instead of balanceing tho that helped. He builds late model engines too and told me why he didn't rebalance, Something about the computer wanted him to add weight outside the diameter of the crank.

Oh, well thats easy, you just put a big enough stroker in there till you catch the weight!!

If you search on 4cycle's forum there is a long post I read about balancing and counter weights. The balance shaft changes what direction the vibration happens is what I got out of it, so for example maybe you feel an engine vibrate up/down but the mounts can absorb sideways vibration....so you set the balance shaft to change the vibration to the side. They can also change what rpm it vibrates at. I don't know if that post is correct of course, also it seemed like the piston to crank balance was not necessarily the same thing. One guy said he does not even balance his performance engines unless he does really radical things like putting stroker cranks in and running huge rpm. Others do not agree with him. There are also different ways to balance them. Many guys there are running 6.5hp, some said they took the balance shaft out and hardly notice a difference in a gokart. I put a clone 16hp in a G9 using the stock mounts, I notice no difference at all in vibration in fact it might be smoother if anything. It does have a balance shaft in it and I did not touch it, but it looked nice when I was taking the governor shaft out of the case lol.

I also know that with cars if you go above about 2L with a four cylinder you start to run a balance shaft. To them its just more weight and loss of power, it is only a vibration/harshness thing and not good for performance.
