G8 Rear seat build project (MIKES!)
Mike, we are following your plans for your seat build this weekend. We put 20 hours straight into this build starting Sat morning and not stopping until 4:30AM Sunday...We thought we'd get it done in one day....Not...!
We built most of this, following your specs, with slight modifications in some area's, including mounting of the unit to the cart frame and we widened the foot platform. We built the final flip seat, but we can't figure out how you attached it? We thought there were just two outside bolts used as the piviot point, but the closer we look, it appears you've used some type of hinge. What did you use here? We don't think we can make just the two bolts work right without metal scraping as we change its position. How did you do this? Attached is your cart pic we were looking at, and the pictures during our build. We are at a stopping point until we figure this step out! Thanks again Mike! |

Re: G8 Rear seat build project (MIKES!)
Jim, thats allot of fabbing in a short amount of time! Looks great! But with that Jr. Dragster next to the cart, what the heck are you talking to me for? And whats under that cover?
I built the flip seat 3/8" shorter than the inside measurement of the inside, main frame dimension. Then I welded 2 nuts (5/16") on the vertical side of the flip seat. In mounting it to the main frame, I spaced it with a 5/16" washer on each side, so it wouldn't rub either side, then used lock tight to hold the bolts from turning out or in. I suppose you could double nut here, but it doesn't look cool! Jim, put some flat strap, running front to back in the center of that large expanded metal section, so if you stand on that area, it is supported. That expanded metal will stretch, and then sag if you put weight on it not supported. And I hope you unhook your TCI plug when welding on the car,(electronic ignition). Don't want to cook that. |

jim, also put a tow hitch on it. Even if you will never tow anything with it. Because these cars are so versatile, you will. I used the light duty (1 1/4") receiver so it didn't look so over powering on the back of the car. I now have a small trailer just for the cart, yard work, carrying block, its loaded with fire wood as we type.

Re: G8 Rear seat build project (MIKES!)
OK, thanks Mike! You are very observant!! Yea, its a mini drag, 7.90 in the 8th. There is a 1964 and a 1/2 Tubbed mustang under the cover - 11.2 in 1/4 mile.
The closer I looked at that picture, the more I finally realized it was a tarp or something I saw under your seat. We screwed up on that cross brace on the seat frame. We didn't realize you had used flat scrap, until we had already welded a 1" L bracket. We used the plasma and cut that edge off. So, I guess we need to cut another 3/8" off that so it doesn't scrape. I also noticed yours is totally round around the 5/8" nut. We rounded ours, but not that much. When you mention using scrap in the center of the expanded metal, which platform? The foot platform or all? I didn't see that on yours. TCI...No..didn't think about that. Hopefully, its ok! Yea, we will be putting a hitch on it. I'll be using the cart to haul the blue crapper container from the camper to the dump station each weekend, and possibly pulling jet ski's from the lake someday. We just haven't made it that far yet. Firewood? In Arizona? You have tree's there?!! We'll finish up this cart this week and then we'll start on my buddies G9 rear seat. Right now there is a huge box on it that we'll have to remove and then find all new mounting points again. Has anyone made this seat for a G9, that can share info? Thanks for the info and pics Mike! |

Re: G8 Rear seat build project (MIKES!)
Here is a picture of the strap to beef up the large area under the seat bottom. I used only one piece, but 2 would be better spaced out. Mine was 1 1/4"x3/16" I believe.
And yes I did use 1 1/4"x3/16" strap on the flip seat (long side) so the floor would be as close to flat as I could acquire. And yes, I do carry a blanket 48x72" back there so when hauling crap, I put that down to avoid scratches if possible. |
