Default Strong Gas smell from cart.

I just bought a 1992 G9 that is giving off a strong smell of gas. It is very noticeable in my garage. Any ideas what is causing this? There are not any leaks showing on the ground (no puddles). My fuel tank release valve/grommet are good and the gas cap is tight. I don't see any cracked/loose hoses. Any help is appreciated! Thanks.

Don't know what I'm talking about here, but, check to see if there is gas in the air filter housing.

Smell oil dip stick, to see if there is gas in the oil, or if it is over filled with gas being pumped into crank case.

Also check to see if the float valve is stuck open in the carb.

I had the same problem with my G2 when I brought it home.

My carb had a very weak return spring and was not completely shuting off the carb. The fuel just filled the airbox and soaked the filter.

Carb is clean & valve not stuck, air box is dry, filter is clean & dry. Dip stick smells like oil.

Those are all good signs. I would start looking for a fuel leak, old cracked hoses, loose screw on filter cap at gas tank, and there is a gasket on the inside of that cap. Just start looking around.

And welcome!!

Also on edit, before your done, I would replace every hose on the car with new. Some is 1/4" and some is 5/16". Just good insurance. Except the small section where the PCV valve is, on the passenger side of the valve cover.

Found out why it smells of gas. --There is gas leaking around the bottom of the float bowl. The bottom bolt is tight so is it possible the gasket is bad. Or is there a problem with the float causing too much gas (overflow) to get to the carb? Can anyone recommend a way to fix this? Thanks.

One, the other, or both! Also there is a copper washer (gasket) on the bolt on the bottom of the float bowl.
Glad you found it! Mike

Should also tell you, there is a thin O-ring in the carb. body, where the float bowl mates to the carb. I got one at ACE hardware.

Good luck Mike

One of our Yamaha golf carts was having the problem with smelling un burnt fuel. Yesterday I removed the carbeurater. There is no bowl. There actually wasn't to much to this model of carb. Apparently it's fuel injected but it wasn't labeled as being EFI. I cleaned up everything, flushed with cleaner. Put everything back together. It seemed to stop the smell on my shakedown run.

The only other problem with the same cart is I don't know if the throttle cable that runs from the governor to the carb is the right one or needs adjusted. There is a delay like the cable is loose. It appears the only way to get to the cable to adjust or replace is to remove the alternator because it is directly on top of it. Is there an alternative way?
