Mark...120 lbs compression, great! New carb, Bad! With what you have posted, I would expect bad crank seals. 2 cycles need "ring compresion" and "crank case pressure". Look to see if there is oil/dirt on the engine side of the primary clutch/oil pump gear housing. The flywheel side is hard if you don't take the time to take off the "shrouding/flywheel" although if you "feel" underneath the "shrouding" and feel grease/dirt.....crank seal! Good luck...Keep us informed. Dave

thanks dave. from what i can tell you are correct in your diagnosis (crank seals) ok next question. i have rebuilt small engines before but im new to the yamaha thing. so is this something i can do myself or do i need to take to a shop and have them pressed in. also since i will have it torn down that far any other suggestions that you would do. thanks again

Mark, I usually change crank seals with the engine in the car. Unfortuatly you do need a special puller to get the "fixed sheave" part of the primary clutch off, (it "swedged" onto the tapered end of the crank shaft). Other than that easy hand or air tools. The flywheel side would envolve, taking of shrouding/flywhell (you'd need a standard puller for that) and the timing plate assy. (Mark the plate to the engine case so you can put in exactly the same location for timing). The seals are on the out side of the cases so no need for "pressing". I also change the clutch side first, It seems to bad first (I guess because of the rotating mass and larger size crank bearing. I can't think of anything else you'd need to do other than clean up. Good luck Dave

a quick way to tell if your seals are bad is to spray a lubricant on them while the motor is running like wd40.....the motors rpm's will surge...
