Default daughters G2 needs help...

hi guys,
i have a G2 for my daughter with the stock gasser (292 i believe?). for the past few day she has been riding the snot out of it and when i came home from work today she says "it wont go". i went out to look at it and when i step on the gas it pops and backfires thru the carb, barely moving...when i take the air filter off completely, it runs like a top. is it time for a new filter? the old one looks fine to the eye but when i asked gp at his house he suggested asking here.

thanx for any help,

mike

You may want to look closely at the 4 rubber straps that hold the lid on tight, also check the seal/gasket in the lid. Check to see if the lid is flat/not warped. I can not tell you or anyone else why the air box sealing is so important on these cars. Why would it run good with it disconnected (at the carb)? You would think to much air would come in and would run bad (run lean), but the first thing I tell my customers.....Check the air box and disconnect it and do a test run. If it runs better, airbox problem, if not another issue. Good luck Dave

thanx dave for your response. would the cart be ok if i got one of those small like 4" air filters from the auto parts store? just dont want to do damage to the motor. the cart doesnt have an airbox now and has always run good, neither does my yellow one and that runs super. i only have the top and the hose so i can get a filter on.

thanx again ,
mike

I really don't have an awnser for that one (not being stock). I would suggest searching this post for guy's that installed a K & N filter and rejetted the carb. Let us know what you do and how it works. Dave

Ive read somewhere that the cone filters damage the engine. That was on the G16 so Im not sure if it applies but I would defiently do some research first...

just sounds to me like the carb is dirty or out of adjustment.....I used to run into this all the time with lawn mower engines...removing the air filter would change the fuel/air mixture enough to get it to run. Maybe you should try your air filter and compare the box closely?... as for cone filters damaging the engine...not possible if it was good quality unless the individual who installed it never adjusted the carb for the increased air flow they cause...(more air flow is usually a performance gain)

thanx for the help guys, just want to point out again that i do not have the air box, just the top , the hose for the carb and the filter,on both of my G2's. hers was running great til monday, now it runs like crap...will try a universal air filter kit this weekend and see if it helps.
