Default Torque Spring mod

I have read a few places about ppl putting spacers behind the stock torque springs to increase the pulling/low end. Has anyone here done this? I'm not in the market for a new torque spring kit, but would like the extra power for hills around here. What are the specs I would need? I've read somewhere on here that someone even used a piece of Pvc for the spacers. I'm just not sure what diameter or height(thickness) the spacer should be.

I haven't used the spacer method, but for $50.00 get the new spring. I've done it in three carts and it's a night and day difference. I can climb steep inclines without a problem, so it's worth it!

well, I'm just trying to save that 50.00 bucks right now, this was a gimmie cart, and the wife said not to spend any money on it. :}

Go to your Yamaha dealer and get a "concierge spring" (#90508-45849),10 bucks! Along with a new "circlip" (#93410-25017-00) $?. Probably just a couple $.

The circlip was replaced with a spacer, (#jss4632209),for extra strength,but the spacer is $44.00.

Anyway,install the spring with a new circlip and it just might hold up. Be sure to keep an eye out for the circlip to fail, causing the helix (spring seat) to rub up against the transmission case. You want to catch that early, so you don't ruin the tranny.

Here are a couple pictures of mine-it has the spacer behind the helix.

Good luck! Mike

Smallblock will shoot me for this!

You can only put a spacer behind an G1 secondary spring or aftermarket (that should not need it). The 4 stroke stock spring has pins on the end of them to preload the sheaves so a simple spacer will not do. You can put it in a vice and stretch it longer I did and it helped. Odds are they compress over years anyway. I made mine way over an inch longer.

The G1 runs backwards too so the spring has no ears that lock into the sheaves.

Mike has it right the spring for the yamahauler/etc is supposed to be more heavy duty and what I would use. I don't like the aftermarket but that is just me. Also make sure your tension cable is good or if your model does not have that the motor mounts are good. If the engine torques back towards the trans you will lose your pulling/climbing power. Worn belt also bad for that. Also a cut secondary sheave helps you get a lower gear going to get one on my cart, it worked nice on the other cart I put one on....works even better with the clone 16hp in it. If you can doubling the power is the best way out of this issue lol. Even the clone is just night and day difference. I can sit on a hill with two men stopped not running, floor it and it hits full shift rpm in maybe 2-3 seconds and off you go spinning up the hill. That is with new cut sheave and rebuilt stock clutches (new primary alum sheave on G9 clutch) and stock spring in secondary. I might have stretched the spring a little I forget.

I took my cart to a guy in Wytheville because I didn't want to pull it apart and mess something up. He removed the clip and installed the splined spacer and reused the stock spring. Also replaced a worn sheave. It made a big difference, and it performed well at CAW.

Both the alum sheaves primary and secondary wear and get dished out, they should be straight edge to center on the belt surface. When they get worn the clutches do not shift right and it will slow the cart down. You can tell they are bad when the belt will not get to the top of the primary due to the wear. Some people cut them straight again on a lathe, but they are only so thick and wear through at some point.

The stock setup is not that bad, I think a lot of people have worn and/or dirty clutches causing more problems than anything else. Nobody services the clutches golf courses included, usually because they were new enough they didn't have to.

thanks for the replies. I'm going to stretch the spring a little. this was a maintenance cart at a golf course. Going to service the clutches. it did not have the motor tensioner on it when I got , but I have put a tensioner on it, and it helped a bunch, the belt is brand new. I have ordered the yamahauler spring and a new circlip.

That should help a lot. Mine I can sit on a mild hill and floor it, it will rev up and go but takes few seconds to do it. RPM starts low then builds with a load. I also cut my ramps down in order to pull a boat out of a lake, lol, but it only works to about 5mph. Another thing is get a gps, run down a flat and get a top speed. Loosen the tension cable until you don't go faster then tighten much as you can but hold that top speed. That seems to be the way to get the most and not lose speed mine works nice that way.
