Default G1 Accelerator Torsion Spring

I was wandering if anyone knows what the accelerator torsion spring does on a gas Yamaha G1? I have 2 G1 golf carts. One has somehow been modified to go really fast. The only difference I can see between the 2 carts is that the faster one does not have a torsion spring on the accelerator. Does anyone know what this spring does?

Thanks

What do you mean? There is a spring in the lever of the governor on top of the trans, it controls the speed of the cart once you go faster. When you turn the screw in it makes more pressure on the spring, the throttle cable (from pedal) is attached on the other end....so the throttle pulls on the spring. The tighter the screw on spring the more pressure you put against the governor that is trying to turn the carb off. You can put a longer screw in. To defeat the governor you can clamp the spring to the lever opposite side of screw, it can't pull away from the lever then. But that will put a lot of pressure on the throttle cable it will shorten its lifespan. What I did is took the lever off the trans and drilled that hole out, so it spins on the trans. You might need to add a return spring, you will have no governor and light pressure on the pedal. I did the same to my G9. Some people take the cable from pedal off and attach it direct to the carb. The G9 and newer carts work about the same way, but use a stud to pull the spring back instead of a screw to push it. They have a lot more adjustable range, if you like going slow.

The spring I am talking about is at the far end of throttle cable. It hooks around where the cable sleeve atttaches and then again where the cable attaches...if this makes sense. It appears to pull back on throttle cable and has two seperate coils on one peice of steel. I am guessing it has something to do with the slowing the cart down after initial acceleration. Still wander if I need to get one. About $11 shipped. Part name and # are 90508-16460-00: SPRING,TORSION

You mean the spring with two loops in it? That one just keeps the slack out of the cable itself. Its like a return spring but mounted on the cable. It should have nothing to do with speed of cart, unless you bypass the governor and have no other return spring that could be a problem. If the governor is working it should pull the throttle off any time, not just at high speed, iirc. That cable spring is pretty weak and does not do that much, but it is better for cable life if it has a little tension on it at all times.
