Default Yamaha G8-A trouble running - have to pull choke to get up a hill

I have a 1991 Yamaha G8-A that quit running. WHen pressing the gas pedal the motor would turn, but would not engage into gear. After checking all the easy problems, and cleaning up the carb a bit, finally tried a new spark plug and she took off. (Even though the old spark plug was still sparking fine). Anyway, she runs fine now except on full throttle or when on a hill. IT will start to choke out, and I have to pull the choke knob to get it to run normal.

Any ideas what could still be wrong? Cart has run fine for years prior to this problem.

Thanks in advance - sorry for my lack of terminology - definately a novice at this.

Try this...Unhook the air box hose from the carb, fold it out of the way...if it runs better you have a air box seal problem. I know it sounds strange, but at least try it. Let us know what happened.

I'm having the same trouble with mine and yes disconnectiong the hose from the carb helped. Can I jus put a cone filter directly on the carb and eliminate the air box completly????

That seemed to fix/help the issue. Now the problem is finding the air leak...

Thanks.

Buddy, you have an air leak at either the air filter box or at the plastic manifold spacer between the carb. and the head.

The filter box is real finicky, about the gasket in the in the top sealing to the bottom.

There is a plastic spacer between the carb and head, and they can crack ( hard to see till you take it off and inspect). Also get new gaskets for each side of that spacer.

Thanks, I am guessing it's the air box, as 1 of the 4 tabs used to clamp the lid down with the rubber strap is broken, so thinking I don't have a good enough seal on the air box. Ordered new parts and will see if that fixes it.

Thanks.

What you may want to do is use zip ties on the air box until the rubber hook come in thats what I did for a temporary fix. Hope that helps, Brandon

Cajun, you can put the after market filter on, but you will have to rejet to a larger size main jet. Or it will still run lean.

And yes, we would like to see pictures of both your cars!!
