2002 vs. 2005 cart
Newbie here looking for a little advice. I am looking for a gas cart and since I own Yamaha dirt bikes (among others) but no EZ Go or Club Car dirt bikes, I figure that I can't go too far wrong with a Yamaha Golf cart. My question is that I can buy a 2005 cart (with the larger engine) or a 2002 cart (w/out the larger engine). Both carts are lifted, larger tires, rear flip seat etc., but the 02 is cheaper by some $800 and that's a lot of beer and pizza where I live. I (and my kids) will be using the cart to run around a family farm, cow trail, etc. during the summer and run around the neighborhood when we are at home. The kids that will be driving it are 10, 13 and 15, so no plans for a 600cc Raptor motor or anything. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Re: 2002 vs. 2005 cart
Don't let the "larger" engine sway your decision. There's not much difference in performance between the 2 of them.

Re: 2002 vs. 2005 cart
Thanks for the response. I'd hate to get the 02 cart and later wish I had more power. From my perspective, it doesn't matter what the question is, the answer is always more power. http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/image...s/icon_lol.gif No one has ever said "I wish I had the smaller engine" in any car, truck, boat, airplane, etc. but we've all said I wish I had more power at some point. That's the reason for my question. I had read somewhere that there was a significant change in Yamaha power ratings and that it made a big difference in how the carts performed, so I am trying to make sure I don't hit that pitfall. Any other differences that might make a difference to me in the long run?
Appreciate the help before I spend the money. |

Re: 2002 vs. 2005 cart
I think there is a noticeable difference between the 2 engines. Also the 05 has a better king pins. Do you know how the carts were previously used? Clutches could be better on the newer cart.

Re: 2002 vs. 2005 cart
The 2002 is a private owner that has been used by an old retired guy who was too old to drive on the street. he is now unable to drive the cart so his family is selling it. I haven't driven it yet (it's about 1.5 hours away), but the pics look good and it sounds clean with recent tune, etc. They got it in 2007 but I don't know original usage or buyer. The 05 was used by a golf course and is at a local reseller. They go through the carts, tune them and lift, etc. but that is about all they do. Similar usage for first part of their lives is my bet.
If I am not mistaken, the 2002 has a 300 cc motor vs the 350 of the later version; I would think that additional displacement would be noticeable. Didn't know about the kingpin design. Any other issues that are different or I should be aware of? Thanks for your comments. |

Re: 2002 vs. 2005 cart
Sorry, I thought I read that there wasn't much difference in them. I've got the smaller engine and it does very well for what I want it to do.

Re: 2002 vs. 2005 cart
I know 800.00 is alot of cash, so you might consider this. 2002 (G16) yes, 301cc/9.5 hp (but you'd be fine with that engine), old style "worm gear/pitman steering system" (more play in the steering wheel), clutches are the same, but 4 years of use compared to the 2006. 2006 (G22) 357cc/11.4 hp,2 more hp, but I don't think I could feel the differance. The rack & pinion steering is much tighter steering. But...when the kid's hit something hard (you know they will, we were all kids!), the expense could be much greater for repair on the newer "rack" car. It's nice if you buy from a dealer, you should get a warranty of some kind. If the 2002 was just "serviced" talk to the dealer/guy that did it and ask about the overall condition. Hope that didn't make your decission worse. Good luck on what ever you decide

Re: 2002 vs. 2005 cart
I appreciate all the feedback. No warranty on either cart, but that seems to be the going deal in this area and part of the reason I am looking at the Yamaha carts; I figure they're well designed and built which minimizes my risk in this situation. After the feedback here, it sounds to me like the 3-4 years less use is worth something and that fact (along with the bigger engine, better kingpins, R&P steering, etc.) probably puts the hard lean towards the newer, G22 design. Yes, $800 is a lot of money, but better to have paid too much than to pay too little. Pay too much and all you lose is money; pay too little and the product you buy can't do what you bought it to do so you lose everything and have to start over.
SB - I have seen your posts in other threads and I appreciate your taking time to address my concerns. Now all I need is to get the cart and figure out how to put a bigger engine in it. Remember, the answer is always more power. |

Re: 2002 vs. 2005 cart
Gotta stay focused; get the cart, then upgrade. I can see too much fun with this thing though. Easy to get lost in it and spend way too much money, but sure would be a blast.
If they make a kit for an 18HP engine, doesn't someone make a bigger V Twin for a lawnmower that will work too? I could justify this if the existing engine went belly up and you had to replace it anyway. OK, a replacement stock motor is $1,400 and for another $600, I can get a lot more power. Dangerous stuff..... |
