Unhappy bad solenoid?

I have a question relating to a G9 gas Yamaha, just the other day the starter decided to engage all by itself. The key can be turned off at the starter will start to spin without any warning. The solenoid will click but even if the gas pedal is pushed and then released it will not stop. I have disconnected the battery and checked the ground (even added an additional ground) thinking the other might be weak and no change. I am new to golf cart ownership and do not know a lot about them. Even after I am able to disengage the starter (I dont know what helps) it will after minutes start all by itself.....

Unplug the small 12V feed wire from the solenoid to be sure but sounds like the soleniod went south on you.

The "actuation" of your solenoid is the "stop switch" activated by your accelerator pedal. Just unplug it and check for continuity "opened and closed", several times. If checks "ok", I would say your solenoid is stickin in the "open" position giving power to the starter all the time. Good luck Dave

Unhappy Re: bad solenoid?

Well I have replaced the solenoid as well as the switch at the foot pedal and the problem still exists. Even if the key is off and the 12v lead to the solenoid is connected the carts starter will engage. Does anyone think it might be the ignition switch itself? I am new to owning a golf cart and so far it's not the most trouble free thing I have ever done....can anyone help out a novice?

It is very rare, but I have seen a "avr" (automatic voltage regulator) cause that problem before. Unplug the voltage regulator and see if the engine turns over and stops when you let off the accelerator pedal. Just a thought. Later Dave

Thanks for the advice, if anything I am getting a lesson in golf cart function and electronics. I will try the voltage regulator and see what happens. Mark

Well, again lease keep in mind that I am new to golf cart ownership. I purchased a voltage regulater off of Ebay for my 1991 G9 Yamaha and I cannot find out where the voltage regulater is. I have looked for what I recieved on the cart and it is no where to be found. Can someone tell me where it might be? I am just about to drive it off a cliff.................

I hope you don't plan to be with the car off the cliff!!!!! The voltage regulator is located on the driverside rear inner fender. (if your looking at the battery, just to the right and up) You may need to take the 2 10mm head bolts that hold the bracket onto the inner fender (the bracket holds the AVR/back up buzzer and the main fuse) so you can unplug and install the new regulator. I really hope this works for you! Good luck Dave
