G22 steering problem
Hey guys, I'm still here working on my "new" cart. At this point, I have installed the HD rear springs from Jake's, the rear seat and the lights. I have the long travel suspension kit coming (Jake's again) along with the new wheels/tires (22's so I don't hit the rear frame). This stuff is getting expensive. I've been taking pictures of it as I go and will post them one day when I get around to downloading them, but I have a new issue to ask for help with.
When I turn the steering wheel all the way to the left, it's like the gear comes off the rack and the steering wheel spins freely with no change in the direction of the wheels. I can manually push the wheels back a little to the right, the rack re-engages and everything works fine. I have looked and see no clear adjustment/stop to fix, but I may be missing something. Has anyone seen this before? Any help out there other than getting a Mustang II front end and installing that? Thanks for any help out there. I can't wait until the engine blows up and I can put in a V-Twin. |

Re: G22 steering problem
I would sell the motor before it blows up. Blown up worth nothing. Running motor, worth $3 to 500.

Re: G22 steering problem
I agree; blowing up a motor is no good in any definition. Sort of a justification to spend more on something that already works. If it ain't broke, don't spend money trying to fix it. OTOH, if it isn't running I can justify spending money to get it back on the road.
Back to the steering issue; no one with any help here? I can't believe that I'm the first guy to deal with this particular issue........ |

Re: G22 steering problem
Sorry on the steering issue, to new for me. Mines a 91! Someone will come along.
I'm just thinking $500 would go quite aways in getting that big HP!! Have you gone to TNT site, to see the exploaded view of your steering gear? Sounds like your missing some kind of stop. |

Re: G22 steering problem
You should be able to slide the boots off to the side and check to see if the end gear/splines are broken. Possible that someone hit something with wheels turned all the way and broke last tooth or more.

Re: G22 steering problem
What is the TNT site where I can see the exploded view of the rack? I haven't been there yet (obviously), but anything is bound to help. I am not sure what I'll be able to see when I pull the boots back, but I don't know that I will expose much of anything. If the teeth are ripped off, where do I get a replacement gear? If I have to replace it, I'd like to get a rebuilt or a used one as that has to cost less than new, but my Craigs list hasn't had one yet.

Re: G22 steering problem
Thanks for the link; I now know what to look for and how to get it apart (I think). Looks like the entire unit is $375 and the cost for the rack is $61 and the pinion is $47. I figure I can buy a lot of beer and pizza for that additional $267 (my labor is free, right?) so I'll attempt to take it apart and figure out the problem on my own. It doesn't look like there are any shims or anything to maintain clearance like the gears in the differential, so that's a good thing. Also looks like the tie rod ends just thread into the end of the rack, but I'll figure that all out when I start taking it apart.
Any thoughts on where to get a used/rebuilt one or is that just not available? |

Re: G22 steering problem
Part numbers don't quite match what the TNT site shows, but I don't know if the first 3 letters (JW1 vs JU0) are significant. Anyone have thoughts/specific knowledge on this?
I hadn't thought about looking on eBay for this stuff; probably should have though. I bet you could buy the parts from the first golf cart ever made on there. A complete, new rack for a little more than the cost of the parts alone makes a compelling case for not taking something apart. Thanks for the help. I'll keep looking there.......... |
