Yamaha GI Drivability
I recently aquired 2 Early 80s Yamaha G1 Carts. Both identical. Both have compression about 118. Both drive decent on flat smooth ground. However 1 has an issue on inclines in forward, it will not go. The other one has an issue with inclines in reverse, it will not go. I do not have a clue. Any thoughts, ideas or imputs would be greatly appreciated and respected. The both move right along fine on flat smooth ground and one is good in reverse and will not go in forward on the inclines. While the other one is totally opposite, good with flat smooth ground good in forward on the inclines and will not go in reverse.
Thank you Tim |

Re: Yamaha GI Drivability
Sounds like each need a drive belt. Does the engine bog on inclines or it sounds good just won't go/

Re: Yamaha GI Drivability
They loose engine power.
They sound like they are cutting out. One in reverse the other in forward. Drive Belt? They were sitting for several months exposed to all the weather eliments. Tim Fisher |

Re: Yamaha GI Drivability
Ahh, Thats a different story all together. 1 Remove any old fuel, flush fuel system, replace fuel filter, clean carb. 2. Check youe engine seals, one on each side of the crank. Run it and spray a squirt of ether near the seals. If the RPM's rev up the seal is leaking. The one behind the flywheel can be tricky.

Re: Yamaha GI Drivability
Possible worn clutch. Casting next to flyweights and pins wear and allow flyweights to skew sideways. Also cam plate in clutch may have a deep groove. These explain FWD/REV diffences and no downshifting on inclines. Good luck. Show some pix, and we can examine!
