Any common valvetrain issues with a G14?
I picked up a used G14 which needed some misc electronics (relay and regulator) and a clutch. Got everything installed, spins over nice, but no run. Didn't seem to be getting fuel so I tore the carb down and cleaned (nasty), I have good spark but still no fuel seemed to be getting to the plug. Popped the valve cover off and the rockers just sit there while cranking
So I am guessing that I have a stripped cam gear or broken cam as neither valve even attempts to move. Are these engines known for cam gears or cam failures? Thanks for any insight. Also wanted to say MAJOR kudos to Carts Plus who shipped my clutch order the same day and I had my parts pronto Love the fast turnaround. |

Never had one apart, but could the push rods have slipped off the side of the lifters?

Doubtful ...... I am going to tear it all apart today and find out! My money is on a stripped Cam gear.

Re: Any common valvetrain issues with a G14?
As an update (in case anyone cares LOL) I found both pushrods out of place and that's why the valves were no moving. I still pulled the case half off (was leaking), also found the balance shaft improperly installed and the cam was 2 teeth off. Realigned/timed everything, adjusted the valves to .004 and sealed up the case (after a thorough scrub / wash out inside the case).
Fired right up! Also realized that I am missing the #2 throttle cable (from carb to governor) so just wired that wide open for now until the cable gets in. She runs great and really scoots! |

Good deal, Hope the valves didn't hit the piston, being 2 teeth off!!
You can by-pass the gov. and just run the long throttle cable direct to the carb. Just watch the high revs more than a few seconds. |

Re: Any common valvetrain issues with a G14?
Valves are good thankfully! It runs great, better than I would have expected from such a old cart with plenty of miles on it.
I just have a spring holding the carb open right now, just to give it a few runs and look for any other issues. LOL It flies! The plan is to put the #2 cable on and get it into stock configuration. I have one of the governor power springs and new bushings (ordered it with my clutch from Carts Plus) that I will install for some extra snap. Other than that, it needs some front end work. I am going to make a custom exhaust, install a bigger jet and do some airbox work. 4" lift and some offset 20"s with wheel flares Some fresh paint over the winter and she'll be good enough for me! |

Re: Any common valvetrain issues with a G14?
Sounds like someone might have already been inside there trying to change the cam timing?
Glad you got her running.I tried to use the governor cable to hook to my clone engine, but it was bad.So i ended up just hooking the throttle cable directly to my carb.Saved me from buying a cable and was alot simpler to get things just right. Good luck with it |

Re: Any common valvetrain issues with a G14?
So what are the pros and cons of just hooking the throttle cable direct and skipping the #2 cable? Am I stupid for doing the #2 cable? It would totally elimimate the governor right?

Not stupid at all. CPP (Tom's) speed spring will give you all the speed you want and keeps the govenor assy still working. Be carefull about the 4" lifts, they useually come from some planet that uses the worst steel nown to aliens...hit one bump hard and the brackets bend...not good. Good luck with your project.

Re: Any common valvetrain issues with a G14?
Thanks for the heads up on the cheapy lifts....no doubt you get what you pay for. I have some buddies who have a substantial machine shop. If they bend or break, they can make me new pieces out of thicker metal.
I am contemplating just skipping the #2 cable now and returning the spring. I am sure it would work great but saving the money would be nice. So if I skip the #2 cable and go direct to the Carb, I lose the governor ...... are there any negatives that I am missing? If i can save a few bucks and repurpose the #1 cable without any performance or reliability loss....I am all for it. Thanks for any additional input! |
