problem with headlights
i wondering if someone could help me out, i have a 1988 yammi G2 gas and i hooked up a set of headlight on it. the problem i'm having is when i hooked up the headlights instead of hooking thru ignition switch i hooked them up directly to battery and a bolt on the frame for ground. the lights dont work well until i press the brake pedal, wierd thing is why would the lights work when brake pedal is pressed when there is no electrical wire on brake assembly, very strange.... anyone have any imput on this????? thanks so much

Re: problem with headlights
Yeah kinda wierd unless the brake pedal is creating a better ground somehow when depressed. Ground needs to go to battery or run another wire from where you grounded to frame back to battery.

Re: problem with headlights
Do not ground to the frame of a Yamaha. You can burn the ignition (TCI) up on a G,2, 8,and 9, grounding to the frame. They use an open/closed ground ignition system.

Re: problem with headlights
There is no ground to the frame on yamahas. The engine is not on the frame either and the only thing that takes power. If you do any electrical you must put your own ground to the battery. It is not recommended but you can ground the frame I did, just make sure it is a very good connection. I have lights that only ground through the mounting bolt. If you have wiring problems with a yamaha the ground wires are the first place to inspect, very common t blow the ground fuse too. Everything has a ground wire stock they don't use the frame or cradle except the block is grounded for the spark plug.

Re: problem with headlights
Guys, I don't go to the battery ground or positive per say. I use the ground lug on the starter for ground (including accessories). And I use the positive cable lead, at the solenoid lug, for the positive connection.
For any accessories, I fuse the positive side, starting from the large lug, at the solenoid. (The lug that the large 12 volt cable, that connects to the battery.) This makes for a cleaner look under the seat! For brake lights, I went to the feed side of the peddle switch (the side of the switch that has 12 volts when the key switch is turned on) (when you go to apply the breaks, you always lift off the throttle which opens the solenoid) so you are free to use that power to operate brake lights. (As a side note I use LED lamps in my brake lights, so very little current is required). With this set up, the brake light switch can be mounted under the access floor panel, and the brakes lights will not stay on (with the parking brake applied) if you turn the key off when exiting the car. |

Re: problem with headlights
Also back to your statement about pushing brake pedal changes lights.
That means there is a possible corrosion/connection problem with your ground cable because it is grounding through the brake cables from the engine/axle cradle to the frame or neg side of battery. That needs to be addressed ASAP. |

Re: problem with headlights
Nice setup on the brake lights Mike, I thought about it but then the cops could see my brake lights I hardly ride at night so I never bothered, I only go from the campfire home/etc on private drives. I do have a nice red LED to put on the back, some colored LED to go under the cart, etc, and was waiting to put the clone in to install them.
