Default G9 hesitation

My 1991 g9 recently has been giving me trouble, when I give it gas it runs rough and kind of Boggs down and sometimes back fires when you let off the gas. I took the carb off and cleaned it also I checked the plastic spacer behind the carb for cracks it was fine. I even drained the gas tank thinking I might have bad gas but it is doing the same thing. It kind of has a strange exhaust fuel smell. I was wondering if maybe the carb could be going bad? It is original. I checked the plug it had black carbon deposits on it I clean it and still did not help, I have checked the air box for leaks it is tight. If anyone has any ideas let me know i am stumped

Rebuild the carb.It sounds like it is plugged with varnish from this Wonderful GasThe shelf life is only a few months, but there are cases that it clogs up carbs fairly quick, plus it leaves a sludge-deposit in the tank, filters and float-bowl.Replace your fuel-filter,remove and rinse out the tank, and rebuild the carb.Run the highest-octane you can afford, and use a fuel treatment.Star-Tron Enzyme is Highly recommended, and it really works. You can get it at Home Depot, boat suppliers, and other places. It is one of the best treatments made, and so far the best for Ethanol, and it stabilizes for 2 years.A 8oz bottle(48 gallon treatment) is $6.99.Hope this helps.

Once I adjusted the throttle cable to allow the carb to fully close, the back fireing went away. Maybe check your choke cable to see if its closeing all the way too.

Start looking for threads on how to adjust throttle cable. As well as cleaning the carb. Looks like you have the rest of it covered. I think its throttle cable not closing when you lift off throttle.

I tried one thing I removed the throttle return spring and now the cart runs like a champ.it's strange why that would affect the carb it is like the throttle wasn't being released all the way, my question is it going to hurt anything leaving the spring off?

Was the spring holding the throttle? If it is too long or connected incorrectly it can prevent the thriottle from closing,or hold it open too far.The spring should be there if it is a factory piece,as it will prevent the throttle from sticking, but it needs to be the correct spring. If you know someone with a similar cart or look on the site to find a pic that you can compare yours to.I would diagnose the problem and repair it before replacing the carb.A can of carb cleaner is a lot cheaper than a new carb.

The spring removel making it run better, would make me curious as to weather the upper throttle shaft bushing was bad. But I agree with Changa, I would prefer the throttle spring be on there. And I would be thinking about replacing the bushing before the carb.

If you get a new carb it will have the bushing in it. It would be wise to check the adjustments before installing the carb. It does sound like you may have a worn bushing or throttle shaft and i concurr with the others in regard to the spring. It should be left in place as it is there for a good reason.
