For the '97 4 stroke motor ....... what is the manufactures suggest minimum compression for a serviceable engine? Thank you

Scotty, G2-G14 160-175....I would be suspect of anything below 150.

Is that from the manual? I have one in here that has 125#, that is the Ezgo bottom limit.... This thing runs like doodoo & sounds like a mixer full o rocks. Any hill kills it. WOT kills it. Just adjusted valves and changed all filters. Purged the tank and put fresh fuel in here? I would boil the carb but the noise makes me wonder.....

Yamaha's like compression. They will really fall off when it drops, but the noises bother me too. Maybe somebody has been in there already and didn't get the timing back correctly. That would cause some compression problems.....

Customer's complaint was that power fell off gradually and now can not haul lots of people on it anymore?

According to that post 125# is way too low to even mess with the 'why won't it accelerate properly issue' and generally loud unsettling operation. I am used to a very quiet 2 cylinder robins engine .....
this is too loud to carry on a normal conversation while riding in it?

I think I know the answer

Sounds like it's low on blinker fluid, or the muffler bearings are worn.

The clutches are more suspect to make noise than the engine, I would guess if the engine is it will not for very long. A little valvetrain click and stuff like that, some the cam wears in the case and knocks a little, otherwise I never heard one that was 'loud' excepting a rattly clutch. You can grab the clutch and see if it is loose, they have a little play but not a lot. Some grease might make it go away if its not totally in need of a rebuild. Could have some other odd problem like muffler loose inside or whatever.

I would guess if engine it really needs a rebuild/replacement before it goes boom. Its valves or piston, you could pull the head and check the valves, did you try oil in the cylinder and another compression test? Its just usually the oil ring goes before the compression rings and it blows smoke, but someone could have done some rebuild work and screwed it up already....or the valves are bad. If it is crank/rod bearings well not much to say there lol.

Just a thought, I had a small engine that the jugs were bell shaped and the piston would slap at the bottom of the stroke, made lots of noise and no power.

Oil in the hole didn't improve compression... 125 is the end of a robins useful life? I will look at the clutch later on when it cools off. Thank you
