G2 starter generator

Hi, I am working on getting a g2 that has been sitting for about 10 years. I have it all running now only it drains the battery while running. I have no accessories. I know that the voltage regulator can cause this but when I put the green wire from the starter generator to the negative battery terminal the voltage reading on the battery does not change. Is this indicative of a failed starter generator? Or is there someway to rebuild this or is my only option a new one? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you checked the wiring to make sure the starter/gen red wire is getting +12 volts ?? Grounding the green wire will produce nothing if the red wire is not energized. You should also disconnect (red and grn wire) at the starter/gen (gen. field) and check the resistance with an ohmmeter. Should be around 5 ohms. Hope this helps. RAY

I WOULD CHECK THE BRUSHES IN IT MINE DID THE SAME THING AND I PUT NEW BRUSHES IN IT TAKES ABOUT 15 MIN TO DO@ AROUND 40 BUCKS .GOOD LUCK

I think bad brushes would also result in a "no start" condition, which I assume you don't have. These starter/generators are very rebuildable (similar to the old automotive generators) and if all else fails a good automotive rebuilder would be a good next step. Brush replacement only, while ok, would not address any bearing or commutator issues. I think a little more troubleshooting is in order to find the problem. Keep us posted - RAY

Thanks for the input. I did check the resistance between the red and green wires 5.7 ohms so i think that is within the tolerances. Also I do have battery voltage at the red wire when the engine starts and revs. I guess I will have to find somebody to do a rebuild on it. Thank you.

I just found the problem. I didnt even think to check to make sure the power wires going into the starter generator were correct. but the negative and positive terminals were switched. So anyway with that I didnt even think about it because i thought if that were to happen the motor would spin in the other direction. guess not. Thank you again for the help.

Checked Green and red wire for OHMS reading 9.7 is that gooe or bad

anyone know how to bypass voltage regulator so generator will feed direct to battery club car can be done do not know how to do a yam gas
