Default G9 barely turns over

I have a yamaha G9 which barely turns over when the gas pedal is pressed. The battery had died so I replaced that but it still acts like it's not getting power. Guessing it's an electrical problem and reading other posts I'm trying to determine where the issue is. Using a volt meter there is 12V at the solenoid until I hit the gas, then it drops to 5-6V.

You have a heck of a short, or a bad battery. Go to the sticky up top, "so your yami won't turn over". Read and follow instructions.

Tested the stop switch, same voltage drop. When the gas pedal is off no reading, about 5V when the pedal is down. Battery stays around 12V with the gas down. No clicking from the solenoid.

Need a known good battery. Then take a screw driver and hold it across both large posts on the solenoid. Do this only for a short second. If the starter turns over, repeat this test a few times. I would say the solenoid is bad. But I'm still not convinced you don't have a short in the system, with the heavy draw down of voltage.

After rereading post 3, short might be in solenoid

Thanks for the quick responses.
I thought it might have been the battery at first so I took the one out of my trailblazer and tried that but the same result. I tried jumping the solenoid, no luck. I'll start looking for a short and see where it leads.

check your ground cable from battery to generator.
With a corroded cable or end, you will get a 12V reading with your meter but not the amps to turn over the motor.

Checked the groun to the generator, cleaned it up and still nothing. I was cleaning other connections and kept trying hopeing I would get lucky but I noticed the solenoid started to get a little warm, I'm assuming that should be typical from trying to turn it over a couple of times, could it be caused by a bad ground or the solenoid itself?

When you say you jumped solenoid, did you jump the two large posts? What happened?
If you jump the two large posts and nothing happens you have a bad battery, bad cables, pos or ground or bad starter (brushes?). That's all there is to that part of the starting curcuit.

I just tried jumping the large poles on the solenoid again and it finally turned over. It made a high pitched squealing sound for a couple of seconds and then ran. Before I didn't hold the jumper on there long enough to get it to turn over. Additionally after I stopped jumping the solenoid and hit the gas pedal it tuned over again. However when I let off and tried it again it went back to not working. Bad solenoid?
