Made a Mini Spool for a G2 Rear End

5 Attachment(s)
I was going to weld lock my rear end on my other Yamaha G2 . After having the ring gear assembly apart an washing it up for weld, I start thinking of other ways to lock it. So I did a little research on lockers. Then measured up all the parts of the ring gear assembly. Then made up some drawings and then out to the shop and went to work. I had to use the side gears, for the internal splines. I put the cart back together and gave it a really good test and it worked great. Here is some photos.

That is the best possible solution:thumbup: Limited slip/posi is what everyone really wants, but you have taken "bad welds" out of the "locker" equation. So, what could you produce and sell them to your BGW members for? Have I ever said how great you members are?

Thanks, I Greatly Appreciated this.

Yes I have thought of making more and selling. Just want to really give it some more good runs to make sure nothing goes wrong before producing. Also I'm working on different ways of making internal splines.

That is an awesome job!!! Whip one up for EZGO Dana electric rear end and ship it right over to me. I'll test it for ya.

Seriously, that is a very nice piece!

Nice job, that is a great idea!!!! After studying the photo it looks like a solid part spline to sline, so you have a true posi. Or has NEVER GROW UP cracked one of the important codes of golf cart engineering and made some type of small durable viscous cup (cone) to achieve a limited slip?????? I sure hope he has, because limited slip would greatly help with longevity of the whole cart. Either way its great idea!!! I have a G9 and would really like a limited slip.
below is link for anyone that may want to see one type of a viscous cup.

Thanks for the Great Comments.
And thanks to all for the Free Testing, will that including Free freight too?
I will have to check with my free suppliers and free freight company's to see if I can make this happen.

The mini spool locker is still working Great.

I need one for my G2 sand golf cart. If I can't break it with 113hp and crazy jumps then you know it will hold up for every one else.

Never Grow up-

Are you planning to make a few of these to sell??? or are you willing to share directions of how to build these?

Re: Made a Mini Spool for a G2 Rear End

You could wire burn the splines in after you built it, or after you made the center section. Just need a way to clamp it up.

I had a car with viscus rear and center diff, it was pretty cool. Not the best in mud but great for all around anything use.

Re: Made a Mini Spool for a G2 Rear End

How did he get the machined side gears to stay put in the mini spool? Don't see any welds or pins. Is it just a tight fit that is pressed together. Exploring my options and trying to get motivated to use my lathe instead of just welding them together on my 87' g2a. thoughts?

kinion 09-28-2013 08:13 PM

Re: Made a Mini Spool for a G2 Rear End

He cut the gears off the very end of the splined collars which have the splines for the axles ends. Welded in a short piece, turned it down true and then pinned the whole thing. Still working very well.

Mainediesel 09-28-2013 08:22 PM

Re: Made a Mini Spool for a G2 Rear End

That is what I thought, he just did too good of a job on the finish to tell if it was pinned. Well, I guess that is enough motivation for me. I am going to first try and design a small lockable diff setup, then if the space doesn't allow I will make a mini spool for full lock up. Now to try and figure out how to get my little 6inch atlas lathe to hold 2 inch stock in the 1 inch jaws. Will update with finished product.

Good luck to you. The spool has made my cart much better in the woods while hunting.

Re: Made a Mini Spool for a G2 Rear End

What did you use for steel? And did you do the same as "never grow up" or come up with your own design?

kinion 09-29-2013 09:18 AM

Re: Made a Mini Spool for a G2 Rear End

I am not sure what "never grow up" did with his design, I never got a chance to talk and ask him about his design.

Guys I don't think this guy comes here anymore. I've sent him multiple PM's with no response. There were two guys on here that built a spool for these carts, can't seem to get in touch with either one of them.

I still visit once in a while. Just been extremely busy with work and the kids. My local machine shop has now closed but I can explain how to make the Posi unit. Feel free to PM me you need more detail than I described in earlier posts.

I think there would be a lot of us that could befit from a step by step of getting a mini spool fitted into our carts, if you could be so kind.

More pics of spool.... Once you take it apart you machine the spider gears off the axle spline collars.

Once this is a tight machine fit into the carrier, you drill a hole to mate up with the pin in the carrier
