Default G14 Wobbly

I am working on a G14 mud buggy project. When I got the rolling chassis there was a lot of play in the steering.
I noticed the source of the play is a result of the steering arm "raising" up to the steering box when the steering wheel is turned. There is maybe an 1/8" - 1/4" space inbetween... When I put a pry bar in there to take out the slack, it steers better. Almost seems like it is missing a bushing between the steering arm and the steering box? The nut is fully torqued. Any ideas or maybe a parts breakdown diagram of this creature?

On the top of the box is an adjusting screw with a locking nut on it.
You need to loosen the locking nut and tighten the center screw some.
keep in mind the most wear in the box will be in the straight ahead position. If you get it snug while it's centered it might bind or lock up when turned right or left.
Might need to find a happy medium, also, pull the cover plate off and add more grease.
New parts might be the only way to properly correct it.

Re-pack the box with some new grease, and maybe a little sawdust if you're gonna sell it soon..

Brilliant. Thank you sir. That is exactly what it needed. I got the steering back to zero free play doing this adjustment.

If you have zero free play it would have to bind while turning the wheel lock to lock. Worm shaft/pitman style useually have 1 to 1 1/2" steering wheel play. Packing with grease really does help.

Yeah I had to back it off some to find the sweet spot. I've gotten use to the G22 steering and was wondering how much play the older style normally has so thanks for posting that, smallblock. I also replaced the king pins and bushings. The steering feels great now.
