G1 Driven Clutch

Im trying to install a Plowmans clutch on my G1. After removing the castle nut I tried to get my puller on and the bolts that go into the outer clutch plate will screw in 1 or 2 threads and that is it, when I try to start screwing in the puller bolt the bolts just come out of he clutch plate. This is the type of puller I currently am using.



Should I go to this type of puller to get the outer plate off?



Any advice is appreciated.

And yes, I am having all sorts of issues tonight, hopefully tomorrow night with this thing treats me better!

Hey Wes, I think maybe you don't have the right thread size bolts? You should be able to thread those bolts in at least 4 or 5 turns. I don't remember the size but I think 6mm? It's the pitch of the thread that makes the difference though. Try your local Napa auto parts, they ususally have lots of weird bolts. That puller should be fine, provided that your bolts that thread into the clutch plate are long enough. Once you get the right bolts threaded in, just slowly tighten that center bolt and "POP!" it will come right off.

Oh and leave the castle nut on the shaft, loosen it, but leave it on. That way the clutch won't pop off in your face....

I have the 6mm bolts, I tried again this morning and they thread in about 2 full turns but then stop. Ill try again tonight with the puller and see what happens.

You may have to run a tap into the holes to clean the threads out. If you want to cheat you can cut a groove in the end of the bolt up the last few threads with a good hacksaw blade or similar, or cutoff wheel, so the bolt cleans the threads. They need to go in at least the width of the bolt, into good threads.

Whatever you do never use a sheave puller with arms like that, it will break the sheave off in no time. It can only be pulled with the bolts or another way.

Likely someone has tried to thread standard bolts in the holes sometime in the past. That will have stretched the threads so the correct 6mm bolts will no longer go in properly. A tap will clean it out and you should be OK. Somebody in the past also may have tapped the holes to an SAE size to use the bolts they had. You could try and see if a standard thread bolt threads in by hand to see.

Get a bottoming or plug tap and some fender washers for the bolts in the puller.

I got a metric tap set at the best tool place on the planet, Harbor Freight. Tapped the hole out and then the bolts screwed in as expected, got the clutch install done.
