No forward, only reverse, not all the time

Yamaha g22
Twice now I've tried to put in fwd and go and the engine just revs. I then drive home in reverse. Next morning fwd works fine. I pulled the diff cover today and the gears look fine. I havn't pulled the carrier out yet, but not metal or chunks in the diff fluid, but it was ready to be changed.

Anyone have any idea on what is going on?

Also can someome drop a link to how to pull the carrier out of the diff? I'm going to put in plowmans lunchbox locker in while I have the cover off.

Before going that far, tell us did you check the cables were not loose and were working properly?

No I didn't, but I was wanting to change diff fluid and add a locker anyway.

Can the cables get streched or come out of adjustment? How to check?
