I got a Yamaha motor with j38 285 cm3 stamped on the block, can anyone identify? I'm also trying to fire it up,so far I got compression but no spark. Anyway to test coil?I've got the wire harnest and was wanting to know what needs to be hooked up to make it run.any advise would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

Need more info. Do you have the Igniter and the fuse with the harnes? Also, do you have any of the switches(ign, pedal, rev/foward)? Is the starter generator still hooked up with the solenoid?

Re: whats needed to bench test yamaha engine?
Yes I have the starter and solenoid. Hooked up, but no switches. I have the fuel pump working cause it's sucking gas as the motor turns, but no spark to make it fire.I'm jumping the solenoid w/a screw driver to turn engine.I'm not to sure on the generator.if I can get spark it seems that it should catch.if I new the type of engine then I could try to Google a owners manual. Thanks for replying, I really appreciate it.

The harness should have a long pigtail with a fuse holder, a plastic multi pin connector and two single wires with barrel connectors. Is there a small square box plugged into the connector?

Re: whats needed to bench test yamaha engine?
The only small box I see is what I would think is the brain I do see a connection and two lines that run to fuses, and a silver thing w/three male parts. The harnst is twisted and I'm pretty sure I'm missing a few parts but would it start w/just gas, air, and spark,or these type engines require more, it dose look a bit challenging. Thanks again,
