G1 '81 will not start
Issue is with my G1 1981 Yamaha:
No problems for the last 4 years. Yesterday, put the cart into reverse, it started and I backup , then place it in forward and it would not respond. NOTHING! I checked the voltage on the battery terminals, = 12 v, I charged the battery for several hours, just in case. I have no lights, several tries with the horn, nothing but then on the last try, I got a very low sound as if the horn was attempting to blow. Then, nothing. I did get a click several times when I pushed on the accelerator but following that I got nothing. I pushed the cart backwards and then turned the key to reverse, I got a click but several attempts to follow, I got nothing. I'm puzzled! I would appreciate any help at this point. Thanks, Tim |

Re: G1 '81 will not start
Have you checked to see if your battery cables are not corroded and have a good conection at the battery terminals. Some times the battery cables will get a green type of corrosion that will be under the insulation that you cannot see untill you cut it back a bit. If you hit a bump just right it can raise havoc as the wires/cables flex.

I agree it sounds like a loss of connection with the battery. Check all cables, connectors, etc for corrosion and clean with baking soda and water mixture and rinse well. This will neutralize the acids in the corrosion. Check all wires.

Re: G1 '81 will not start
Yes, the first thing I did was to disconnect the battery cables, clean the terminals and wire brush both connectors and terminals. I cleaned the grnd cable that's connected to the battery cable too. I have not checked the other end. (will do). Has been raining and snowing so will continue tomorrow. I must tract the wires also from the key switch. I guess I must somehow remove the cowling from the cart in order to expose the wires???
As stated, I don't have headlights or tail lights but did a very weak horn sound and then "nothing" after that one "toot". Once while attempting to engage the start/gas petal, I heard a click which seemed to come from the two solenoids on the passenger side but couldn't get this to happen again. Is their any type of switch that would be inline with the starter that could cause current not to pass through? One additional observation: When I backed up prior to not restarting, I was on a slight incline - could this have cause the problem? One point that Slonomo made ... "Check all of the wires" Where do I start? Thanks you both for the advise, Tim |

Re: G1 '81 will not start
Thank you for the feedback ... I have check the only two fuses that I found, one on the battery lead and the second on the side nearest the solenoids (incased in rubber). Should their be more?
Both test okay .. tim |

Re: G1 '81 will not start
Try to by-pass the fuses. Sometimes the fuses get busted or get loose in their connections. Also, try using a different battery. Your battery could be dead.

Re: G1 '81 will not start
Appreciate your reply.
I'm not sure how to "by-pass" a fuse??? I checked the voltage immediately after this issue happened and it was 12 volts. I placed the battery on a slow charge for approx. 3-4 hrs. But -- I will take your suggestion and try a new battery. Thank you, Tim |

Re: G1 '81 will not start
Thank everyone for the help/advise - problem corrected.
SIMPLE ! change the battery! The voltage was 12.5v BUT --- the CCA was 65 ... the battery is rated at 770CCA. New battery, starts , again, many tks for all of the replies, tim |
