Default 1986 G1 having fuel issue's...

Ok guys, here to repair my pasture's G1. I do boat repair for a living..but will be the first to say this is NOT like ANY boat i have ever messed with!

So..reading on here I am under the impression i need to check on the crank seals as the G1 will only run "good" while i hold the choke out.. When i release the choke she will "sorda" stay running but only for a little while. Not long.. I have done a complete restore on this puppy and the LAST thing I need to do is wheel's, paint, and last getting this freaking engine running right! Looking at knocking up the top speed to by either eliminating the gov, or at least maxing it out... Dunno where that 10mm bolt/nut you guys keep talking about, but i am gonna find it for sure!

Any idea's for any other reason's this bad boy would only wanna run with choke full out? I have sealed up the box as you guys suggested, I have a new plug, have fully cleaned the carb out...yes it is VERY clean..lol. And yes, the gas is brand new with NO trash or water in there.. any ideas?

Oh yeah btw..when she starts to die when i let off the choke she will putter for awhile before she die's. IF i take it very easy I can sometime's get her to restart and run if I do not give her full on gas. If i stay at like 1/2th or under she will actually run for a good bit longer than if I had her floored.

IMO, I think the issue is either vac related..as in the seals or some other magic object I havent seen posted about in here! Or fuel related.. Am I close?

Banditz, it is almost certainly the crank seals. I repair mercury engines and I put crank seals in a Yamaha in the same category as water pump impellers in a merc: If you have not changed it yet...it,s bad

Ok buddy, thank you. I will go ahead and change them out. I see where most people only do one side, I am gonna do both! I don't want the preacher bringing it back to me with it not running the way he wish's it to.

The reason some folks only do one side is they do not have the tool to remove the clutch to get at the clutch side. You will need that.

You can make one easily but you will not get the clutch off undamaged without the tool. There are no generic gear pullers or methods that will pop that clutch off the tapered shaft. Here is a pic of the one I made, does not have to be fancy.

Take a 14 mm spark plug and break the insulator off and remove the insulator material and electrode out of what is left of the plug. I used a punch and a hammer. Select a piece of steel rod, long bolt or what have you at least 3/8" diameter. From DOOmsman : Dave may I add to your excellent directions, be sure the rod will bottem out in the crank shaft, not ride on the threads inside the crank. Drill out the spark plug the correct size for the steel rod you have. The plug material is quite hard so use progressive sizes of drill bits to get to the size you want. A drill press will do the best job and there will be a pilot hole to follow where the electrode was.

To size the rod length wise, screw the spark plug into the threaded portion of the clutch shaft till it bottoms out then back it out 1/4 inch. Slide the rod through the hole in the spark plug until it bottoms out at the crank shaft. Mark the rod flush with the end of your park plug. Remove the plug and the rod, insert the rod in the plug, align the mark you made with the top of the plug, then weld it in place. Cut off the excess, angle grinder works fine for this.

To use the tool, screw it into the clutch, tighten, then tap the end with a hammer. Tighten some more, hit it again, continue till it "pops"
