Default G1 cart won't start it just backfires

My buddy has an older G1 cart that he is havng problems with. It was running fine and then it got to where it would just idle. It wouldn't get enough RPMs to move the cart. If we pushed it, it would go for a little ways and then quit again. Now it won't start at all, it just backfires. Any suggestions?

More than likely it needs crank seals. It's not getting enough gas. Try running it with the choke pulled out about half way. Also check the fuel lines for cracks, could be sucking air.

Thanks. How big of a job is it to replace crank seals?

From what I understand, with the right tools it's not a tough job.

Hopefuuly we won't have to find out. We are hoping it's just the fuel lines. He has pretty well replaced everything else since he bought it a few years ago. Would there have been any early warning signs if it is the crank seals?

Over time the seals will wear out causing the engine to leak pressure. This lose of pressure will result in not enough pulse to run the fuel pump. Check behind the drive clutch for wetness on the engine. Bad seals will be blowing out a small amount of fuel/oil.

We have an old G1 at the campground that needs seals and has been running OK with the choke knob out about half way. I used a small c-clamp to keep it in that position. New seals going in this winter!!

Is there anywhere that I can find what is involved in replacing the crank seals?

The best I know is to call Tom at CPP, he is "Mr. G1" http://www.cartpartsplus.com/
