External sparks from coil on G1
Got my G1 running but noticed sparks emitting from the coil. The 2 screws on either side wont budge for me to tighten the ground. The engine compartment gets very little airflow so I am worried about fumes accumulating and boom.

Re: External sparks from coil on G1
Sounds like you have a cracked coil. You need to replace it. Im surprised it is running if the spark is arcing to ground.

Re: External sparks from coil on G1
Give those screws a soak of PB Blaster, or similar penetrating oil. You're going to have to remove them to restore a good ground sometime anyway. Check your spark plug lead to make sure it is inserted all the way into the coil. Check the gap on your spark plug. It should be .025 - to .030 ( thousandths of an inch ).
I need to amend those specs I gave you for the spark plug gap! It is .024 - .028 thousandths of an inch! |

Re: External sparks from coil on G1
Id recommend drilling out the bracket screws or rivits and replacing them with bolts and nuts. for my g1, I made a ground directly to the coil instead of to the bracket, I really don't know why its grounded through the bracket anyways, seems kinda cheap.. after a while the bracket broke and I had a dead cart
where are the sparks coming from? The sides if the coil or the middle somewhere? As stated before I'm sure its not running very good if you have spark not reaching the cylinder, and you might need to replace the coil, but Id still recommended grounding directly, not through the cheap *** bracket. |

Re: External sparks from coil on G1
The sparks come from where the orange wire emanates from the coil and sometimes arc to the ground wire. Where did you ground yours? I don't see anywhere on the coil to attach the ground wire. Did you just hook the ground wire to the bolts and nut you used?
Thanks |

Re: External sparks from coil on G1
Do you think this has anything to do with the rattling noise? The whole reason I took it apart, aside from not running consistently, was the awful shaking and rattling it makes while running.

Re: External sparks from coil on G1
You might want to take a look at your motor mounts, the rubber bonded mounts crack with age and flexing, especially if the motor mount tensioner is broken or missing.

Re: External sparks from coil on G1
Hadn't thought of that, thanks. With fixing the ground it runs smoother but is very loud rattling. It almost sounds like it comes from the clutch. I read something about luging the clutch but I don't see anywhere to add grease. Could this be the rattling?

Re: External sparks from coil on G1
Yes a worn clutch will rattle and is most noticable by it inability to start off smooth and slow (you cannot make the cart creep ahead), it will lurch to a start. The motor mounts and tensioner also come into play here as the motor will move to the rear (if you are starting off in forward) in reaction to the torque. The tensioner limits the movement to a very small amount but if the motor mounts are very cracked all the torque reaction is put on the tensioner, usually breaking it.
