g16 surging and bucking at start
Hi guyes, just bought a 1999 g16 at an auction and when I got it home I learned it surges at low idle but when you floor it ,it takes off like a raped ape. It runs very smooth at wot.It starts very quickly, but sputters and bucks like its running out of gas (at low speed only).
Here's what I have done so far (as per advise from threads on this forum) drained all the gas and added new removed carb, and cleaned all parts with air and carb cleaner. gaskets look okay (replace?) checked and cleaned plug (was black but looks good) I will replace with new checked compression (140 psi) next I was going to replace fuel pump with a spare I have off a g9, If it works I will order the proper one. Anything else I should try? tia, |

Re: g16 surging and bucking at start
thanks for the quick reply, craig. I saw the thread on weights being slung over the roller or something in the clutch, but when I put the cart up on stands, and start it the clutches seem to be doing there job well, when it surges the drive clutch seems to be still engaged but the motor is poping and backfiring.when I put the pedal down it revs up smooth and runs fine. to me that eliminates a clutch problem. I could be wrong though

Re: g16 surging and bucking at start
Sounds more to me like someone adjusted the throttle cables for more "speed". With key off and seat off hit the go pedal and look at the cable going to the carb. If it is moving as soon as you push the pedal you'll have to adjust the cable. They are supposed to have some play before they actually engage the butterfly in the carb. Oh yeah to do this on a G16 you may have to remove the airbox. There is 2 nuts on the carb and 2 small bolts on the back of the airbox.

Re: g16 surging and bucking at start
took the airbox off to look at the throttle linkage when pedal fully depressed. does'nt move at all. In fact, the go pedal goes to the gov, gov linkage moves when I step on pedal, but cable to carb doesn't. Also there is a ton of slack on the carb cable
I don't know anything about governers on the diff,or how they work. Do I have the wrong cable? Everything looks stock to me.And why would the cart run smooth a WOT when the throttle isn't even moving? How bout you yamy experts out there? small block? flint? anybody??? here's a pic of the slack in the cable |

Almost looks like the cable is either broken or stuck in that position. I bet the butterfly in the carb is wide open. Can you get pics of the carb and linkage?

Re: g16 surging and bucking at start
the cable works, but I can push the accerator pedal all the way down and it doesn't come close to taking up the slack in the throttle cable.
I disconnected the cable from the pedal to the gov and I'm going to build a bracket to hook it straight to the carb tommorow. I'll let you know how that goes. thanks for your help so far |

Re: g16 surging and bucking at start
Is the pic of the cable just siting there or are you pressing the pedal? Looks like the carb is stuck open. Disconnect cable and see if it closes.

Re: g16 surging and bucking at start
Good eye rebel! The carb linkage was hung up . The tang that stops the throttle at wot was caught behind the corner of the carb. When I went to hook the pedal direct to the carb I noticed it.
Cart starts and runs perfect now. I just have to mod the cable bracket for a little more throttle, But at half throttle it scoots pretty good! thanks again for your help! |
