Default Re: My just rebuilt G1 sounds like piston/plug contact

Well I just got the engine back running...well kinda. The problem is it sounds like the piston is hitting the spark plug. When I turn the engine over by hand it clanks right at top dead center. I can turn the engine forward and back by hand and it clanks right at the top. When I pull the plug it doesn't. Is it possible to overtighten the head? I torqued it at about 20lbs. Book calls for 18lbs. I put in a ngk bp6hs plug. Engine has a new piston, rings, bearings, seals. The engine will run, but I'm afraid to run it with the noise. I don't want to damage it. Does anyone have any ideas! I'm at my wits end.

Did you use the stock thickness head gasket or a thinner one?

I used a stock gasket. I was recently told that the upper and/or lower rod bearing my be bad and should have been replaced when I did the rebuild. That's what I get for trying to save a few bucks! So not only do I now have some engine slap, but also a slap in the face too!
