Compression in 1989 G2
What should the compression be in a 1989 G2? I want to make sure I'm not dealing with junk before I start ordering parts.
Thanks, Jim |

Re: Compression in 1989 G2
IIRC they are like 180+, they are higher than G9. The newer the yamaha 4 stroke the lower the compression is, except the new drive/357cc I don't know what that is. G2 was the first 4 stroke and is the highest out of the G models.

Does it make i difference if they're checked cold or warm? I just checked mine cold, and it's only showing 45 pounds???

Nevermind. I just re-read some of the other compression posts, and saw that it needs to be checked at full throttle. I tested mine again and it went up from 45 to 140 pounds. My mind is now at ease!!

Hey Jim make sure the choke is off and the throttle is wide open. You will see a big differance with that. And according to the manual it should be warm and the specs are at sea level standard is 178 psi minimum 142 psi and maximum is 199 psi also dont to forget to ground the spark plug lead or you can damage your ignition.

Right the number I gave is for a fresh engine, it will be lower for used.

Re: Compression in 1989 G2
So far I've add the Jake's Long Travel suspension. I'm planning to add a stereo, fab a front bumper and lights, relocate the ignition to in front of me (I hate having it behind my legs), rear hitch and by then I'll probably want more power than the stock G2 engine! And somewhere along the line I want to paint it. I'm currently planning to paint it the same as my '69 Firebird Resto-mod which is being built.

It's amazing what a simple lift kit and tires can do for a Plain Jane cart! Excellent job man!
