Default g1 torque issue???

Heres the skinny... its an 82' G1 with a 6" jake lift with wheel and tire combo. I have had the cart two years and I have slowly lost my low end torque. I have to pull the choke to get started but once it gets started it is rather fast so no complaints in the top speed. I did a muffler BBQ and that didn't help much and I have to use the choke more often now than before. I finally gave up and brought the cart in for a tune up. The Tech checked everything over and replaced air filter, plug, cleaned carb, checked compression and clutch and all was good. He suggested I replace the muffler and then add a clutch kit if that didn't help. Does this seem accurate? would a muffler on the G1 cause low torch and slow starting (I hold the pedal down and have to wait for it to start moving and I usually have to pull out the choke and push it right back in as soon as it starts moving). I don't want to waste $350 if it is not the right fix, on a side note the Tech has a lifted G1 and he said he can do donuts with his. Thanks for your help.

I would start by going thru the fuel-system.New-Lines,Filter,Take the carb.apart, flush with carb-cleaner,and clean the jets with Torch-tip cleaners. If the compression is good, this should cure it.If not, then its' time for crank-seals.Replacing the muffler sounds like throwing parts at it.Does it run better with the muffler removed? If it starts easier, and responds good, there is your answer,if not, money saved!Hope this helps.

I was told with the two-stroke not to run it without the muffler as it is designed to provide needed back pressure.... is this not true?

It will start and run.Don't go driving it around, just try to start it,and see if it feels better when you take off down your driveway, across the garage,etc....You can even just unbolt it,and pull it away from the head.If it has a pipe from the head to the muffler(I can't remember, its' been a while)just unhook the muffler from the pipe.

What was the compression reading? If it is a 1982 J17 car it was a 1 year "low compression" engine. Would be a good reading if 110 to 100 lbs and minimum is 90 lbs. Since choking helps I would take a hard look at the crank seals. Look for any oil/sludge behind the primary clutch/oil pump drive, unfortunatly you have to take off the fan shrouding and flywheel to really know on the pasanger side.

Have to check the crank seals remember a 2 stroke has compression in the crank too but you can't really measure it. Worn cylinder will do that too but should show as lower compression. Bad reeds or a broken piston skirt can also do it. Problem with the clutches will cause sluggish bottom end but would not affect the starting unless the belt is dragging badly, and the cart moves quite a bit on the starter. It might move a little but should not move much. Also check the rubber boot carb to engine for cracks/holes.

bad crankshaft seals will make it run bad, and in time destroy your motor. heres how to check your crank seals. block the exhaust at the "tailpipe" with your hand. piston at bottom dead center. blow smoke (you a smoker?) into sparkplug hole, and watch for anywhere smoke comes out. 2-stroke engines will run lean and destroy themselves if given any alternate air source or vacuum leak not drawn in through the carb.

With it running, spray a quik shot of Starting-Fluid,carb-cleaner,silicone or WD-40 near the crank-seal behind the clutch. If the motor speeds up,even a little the seals are bad.

Ok put the got cart up on blocks started the engine and sprayed starting fluid behind the clutch.... it speed up but not every time (did it a half dozen times and speed up maybe three of those times) I sprayed liberally too. I assume I need crank seals??? it runs like good after initial start up is that normal for crank seals are do they run bad all the way through the power band? Next question is how much work is involved in replacing the crank seals. MY final question is I think I am going to bite the bullet and put a power kit in the clutch too which one would you guys recommend??? sorry for all the questions but thanks for the replies in advance
