Default Starter Pulley Removal Help Needed

Guys I cant get the starter pulley off the crank shaft. I have read and read and all discussions start out fine but the end up talking about clutch removal and nothing about this pulley. What am i doing wrong? Do i need to heat that pulley up to get it off? i hear about this special tool but it all goes back to the clutch.

Any help would be much appreciated

I can try and post pics if that would help. Thanks in advance.

its a tapper shaft so to get it off a puller is needed or maybe what I end up doing is grabbing a block of wood and wedging it behind the pulley and smack it with a hammer turn and smack turn and smack. It takes a lot of effort on some but they have always came off.

thanks guys, so i guess the tapered bolt removes the starter pulley as well. i know i kept reading it was for clutch removal but i guess its for both. now my next question is the bearings that are in it are not sealed and i plan to replace since one is broken. should I go back with open style bearings or can i use sealed bearings? what are yalls thoughts?

i replaced mine i would go with the ones that are for it, and the starter pully is one pc with the shaft, the problem i has was takeing the case apart, the heads on the bolts are phillips and they stripped out so i had to get a extractor to get them out, and i used bolts when i put back together, harden ones. Good luck.

I have no problems other than the pulley, which i finally got it off and I understand the one piece. I was thinking ahead and bought an impact screw driver to remove those screws and it was pretty simple. If you dont have one then i suggest you go out and get you one, got mine at o'Rielly's for $13. To me using it one time paid for itself. I just now need to get those bearings and put it back together. ready to hear it run.

yama we're talking about the crankshaft bearings inside the crankcase.

As an FYI
For those interested, i bought one open faced bearing (like whats in it) and a sealed bearing. My local parts house wanted $25 & $35 for the two open bearings. I found them elsewhere much cheaper but one was a sealed so i took a chance thinking that they had to be identical behind the seals.

I pulled the seals out of the bearing and low and behold it was as i thought, exactly the same. I did however take some brake cleaner and remove the grease that was packed in the sealed bearing.

I prefer non sealed for the fact you can do your own maintance there is not differents on the inside of a normal ball bearing
