How does a G16 starter/generator work?

I have a G16 that is not turning over. The solenoid works, its getting power to the starter. What do the R & G terminals do? What should I be looking for to diagnose it? Ive hit a wall as to my knowledge of how the parts interplay, so I dont know what to look for.

Well first thing to try is to tap on starter with a hammer while pedal is down to see if a brush is stuck... Next take the starter out of cart and take the four rubber boots on the housing off and inspect for burnt brushes and or parts...if nothing visible take starter apart and inspect brush length...

Red and green wire are the charge coil wires. If you have power 12 volts negative and 12 volts positive at the starter and it wont turn over, take it apart and check the brushes before the armature gets damaged! Brush set 40.00 to 45.00, new armature 105.00! Just a note, when you take the starter apart, DO NOT breath that dust, it's just plain NASTY.
