Default g9 problems

Just became the owner of a 94 g9 and have run into problems. I purchased it for 300 and the owner said it just needed a belt and battey. He provided me a drive belt and I got an alternator belt from my local parts store. I lost my key when bringing it home. I replaced the battery and installed the belts. The cart started up and ran ok but it drained 3 of my batteries. The last day of the camping trip the cart suddenly stopped on me. There wasnt a click when I step on the accelerator. It would turn over when I jumped the soloenoid but eventually that stopped. I took it to a guy who works on yamaha gas carts and he said that he swapped in a solenoid and that wasnt the problem. He thinks that it is my starter generator and the parts would cost me over 400 and that I should just sell the cart. (generator and field coil). He can get it to start and run but after 5 minutes it dies. Shuts off and no spark. I would like to get it running because I dont think that I could find a gas cart for less than 700 dollars. Any suggestions thank you and sorry for such a long post.

Start reading this site, all these problems have been discussed on here. Starters are pretty robust, and don't usually fail that often. Not saying it isn't a problem, just betting its the voltage regulator, not the starter. Also starters are in the $200. range.

Start by reading this whole Yamaha site. Thats what I did. Read the stickies up top. Start a thorourgh maint. program on the car. The no spark issue is probably an ignition (TCI) problem, $150 ish., but could also just be a poor electrical connection. Which this era of car is prone to. Just need to start reading.

Good Luck! Mike

I have to go pick up the cart because I can not wait to get started on it. The person working on mine had a g16. I did not know that you could adjust these carts to go over 30 mph stock. He said that his could go over 40 but wouldnt advise that if you have kids. I have been thoroughly searching this site and now know how to proceed in testing instead of just throwing parts at it. I need to clean everything up inside because it looks like it had been used for off road. I never knew golf carts could be this much fun. I am still confused about where the grounds are.

Rj, think this guy is dreamin about 30 with a stock cart! Mine has 23" tires on it, and it only does 28/29 MPH.

Everything has to be grounded back to the battery, if there are lights on the car, make sure they are grounded back to battery, not just attached to the frame somewhere. There is a small (18 gage) wire that goes into the wire harness just in front of the starter, that wire corrodes, and makes a poor connection to the ground lug on the starter. Strip that wire back and put a new eye connector on and reattach it to the starter ground lug.

The ignition uses an "open/closed ground" system, that is why the ground is critical on these cars. Any bad ground can cause the ignition to act funny. As well as blowing the main 10 amp fuse.

Just to add to Mike's comments: If the cart was used off-road, the starter/generator may be full of junk. Mine did the same thing. I tapped on my starter/generator with a hammer, and the thing would come back to life. If that's the case with yours, you may just need to open the generator up, get all of the black dust out, by blowing it out with air, and possibly replace the four starter/generator brushes. For just a few bucks you may fix your problem. However, do NOT breath the black dust in there. NOT good for you!
