Default 1985 Yamaha G2 engine replacement

I have a G2 cart that will be torn down this winter. I would like to remove the stock engine and replace it with something with more horsepower. I have been looking at a new Honda twin that rates at approx. 20+ HP. What parts will be necessary for the swap? Will my existing stock Yamaha clutch work? Im capable of modifying mounts, brackets etc...however, the less modifications the better. Are there engine swap kits out there to ease the process? I also run lights at night, so I need something that will charge the battery while running. Electric start mandatory for wife.

The cart is 100% stock and runs well now. I just want additional power. Cart used at a campground, dirt roads, two track trails etc.

Any input will be appreciated. If there is any better engine swap than Honda, Im open.

Thank you!

Ken

Welcom to BGW! Might suggest looking in the "BigBlock" section. You can spend hours or day's finding awnsers and build pic's and secrets to your questions. Good luck!

Most run the vanguard, and the 18hp is said to be the best bang for buck. For 100 or so you can get a rev kit and the vanguard will run 6K rpm to get your top speed higher. There are many performance parts for vanguards and less for other engines. Not sure about the new honda yet, I read the head/jug are one piece. While it has some nice features hard to say what rpm can be found in it. There are some parts out there for the older honda model.

I thought someone made a mount but it is not hard to make one. You can use the stock clutch though it may not work as well on the trail as an aftermarket. You will have to make sure you get an engine that charges, some don't, or use the stock gen only to charge. If you use the gen you need a clutch with the pulley, or make one/etc.

Is the cart lifted, it will need HS gears to go faster if not. Cartpartsplus has some engine kits people here have had good luck with. Cost is higher, but you will spend some time fabbing up things on your own. I just put second clone in a yamaha and have many days into it. Clone has around twice the power of stock, its not a twin of course but far cheaper at ~300 for the engine complete and brand new. I have around 500 into it with a custom exhaust and cut/ported head/etc.

I would consider the Briggs Vanguard,or a "Clone" Single. The Hondas' are pricey to buy and modify. You can get some impressive power from the clones and there are alot of parts avaialiable.Same goes for the Vanny. You can buy a Clutch-Adapter from CPP,that will allow you to use your stock clutch on any engine with a 1"' crankshaft. There are kits to install the Vanny, but the mount is pretty simple to make yourself.Look thru the Big-Block section for ideas.Hope this helps.

One other thing is if you use the engine starter like a car it can be difficult to shift while it idles. Aftermarket clutches are better at this. I used stock clutch and gen and it starts just like a stock cart, no problems.
