?? G2 engine

OK--I've done a lot of reading on the G2 this w/e as I just purchased one and I have a few questions. Mine appears to be an 87 or 88. Do all G2's have the same engine? I was told that mine is probably a 285cc, I can't find numbers that resemble what the book describes as an engine#. I see numbers stamped into the crankcase just under the oil fill but there is no dash in the number as described in the Yamaha manual.

I read a lot about checking the air box for leaks if you have performance problems. Mine came with a KN aftermarket filter installed so are there any problems with that? The tube that comes out of the top of the head seems to have quite a bit of blow by at high RPM--problems??

Lastly, how do I go about disconnecting the governor and hook directly to the carb on this car? Any help is greatly appreciated. Pictures attached.

Yep, that is a 285cc. Blow by is normal, make sure you have ONLY 1 quart of oil in the engine. (some dip sticks were mis-marked).

Thanks NewGuy. What about the carb (air filter) setup? If these engines have such a hard time with air box leaks how can this work so well? I've O/H the carb but I still must choke to start cold and then it runs pretty rough for a few min. Normal??

This was my setup before I installed the big block. The K&N worked great with the main carb jet opened to .046 diameter. If your engine is running good when warmed up, I would say you are OK. Using the choke to start is fine. I would run my engine in neutral for a minute to warm up then good to go.

Thanks again NewGuy. I just came in from by-passing the gov. Had to make a new bracket at the carb because there just wasn't enough cable adjustment to open the carb completely.

Runs great although there is a rev limiter somewhere on my cart. The engine revs to about 4500 then shuts down till the engine gets to about 3000 then kicks back in. Got any idea where that is located. Guess I could track it down but I don't have a repair manual here so I'm not sure where the trigger is.

Neutral! you've got neutral? Sweet! I’ve got forward and reverse and that's it. I think!

Got any suggestions on updated clutch or where I should look next for better performance. Exhaust maybe?? I got the bug bad!!

I never had to deal with a rev limiter, sorry. It may not be call "Neutral" I thing they call it a service setting. You should have it between forward and reverse just be careful the shifter don't slip out.

Trophyman..Congrates on your new toy. Ron "thenewguy" gives good advise and from the look at his "clean" car pictures...he likes clean things! Now I never new it before hearing it on this site, G2's have a rev limiter in the TCI box and as I understand now G9's didn't. That would explain your problem compared to Ron not having one. Hello all! This site is awesome!!!!!! New to the cart world and very excited to start toying around with my cart which brings me to my question(not trying to hijack your thread trophyman) I've done the govenor screw-in thing but horrible pulling up hill. any suggestions?

Check your front motor mounts. They may be wore out and allowing the engine to move too far back when under a load. There is also a tension

cable under the air box that can be adjusted to help take up slack.
