Its a 95 G9. It has been burning oil for a while now. Always having to top it off. It runs great! What do you think whats wrong. Where do I start.

Re: My G9 is burning oil.
I see the cart has been lifted. This tilts the engine so your oil dipstick reading is now incorrect. Drain and refill the oil, but only use the amount shown on your capacity chart. This should fix the problem!
Make note of where the oil level is on the dipstick and remember it as full. |

Re: My G9 is burning oil.
The oil ring goes bad first in most of these, you have to replace them. I don't know if you need to bore it oversize or not, you would have to measure the cylinder to spec. If not you can just hone it and put rings in, likely lap the valves though the exhaust valve is known to get bad too. Eventually the balance shaft bearing (not really a bearing its just the side case aluminum) will get worn out and start to knock. Not sure anyone has come up with a good fix for that yet other than taking the shaft out. Some have tried to put a bushing in it.

Re: My G9 is burning oil.
Thanks for the advice! It blows a little smoke. I just might keep the oil topped off for now.

Re: My G9 is burning oil.
Change the oil and make sure you only put 1 Qt. back in it. The dipstick does not read correct. Check your air filter and make sure no oil is in there. All G2's - G9's and G14's did this. Only 1 qt of oil required!! Topping it off may just be wasting oil and causing it to smoke.

Re: My G9 is burning oil.
I ran it from '99 to about 2010 when mine started to burn oil a little, on the original engine that I never touched internally. It is thinner, it tends to burn more than normal oil, so I gave up and tossed some 10-40 in there and didn't run it very far. Hope next summer my clone is sorted enough to hit the trails again I really miss it.
