Default Ham Radio

Any of you guys into amateur radio? I just got my "Technician" license manual in the mail from the library and need to study. I hope to get an antenna (inverted "V") set up this weekend so I can at least start listening until I can get my test arranged.

My brother has been a ham for almost 50 yrs, and I've enjoyed short wave listening, off and on, for a long time, too. He gave me an ICOM something or other that I had hooked up to a jerry rigged longwire--it worked good for listening--not so good xmitting. He wants me to get my license--maybe I will now I've got the time.

I got real close to qualifying back in the early seventies, but I never mastered Morse code, and eventually lost interest. There were two 8 meter towers within one block of my boyhood home, and I knew both of the owners very well. One of them was also a model railroad buff. It was amazing he stayed married, lol.

N8CWR here formally KC8BTF General class in West Virginia been a ham since 1994. Really nice hobby to get into my friend you will enjoy it if you like talking all over the world. I had a Carolina Windom 160 stretched between 2 50 foot towers 300 feet apart and talked all over the world. Pretty neat when I talked to a couple soldiers in Afghanistan a few years back. Good luck with your license my friend.
Calvin.

I was intending to put up an inverted "V" so I could at least listen to 10 meter while I'm waiting for a test, but this darned snow won't go away!. : Temps haven't been above freezing for quite a while we got even more snow last night ... not the kind of weather I'm looking for when I want to dig a hole for a post or climb up on a metal roof.

I might just have to rig something very temporary just to have something to mess with, but I hate to have to do something like that twice. And even if I get my license I don't think I could get a decent antenna set up until spring thaw!

Oh well - guess I'll figure something out.

You can actually have the v not perfectly inverted (angled) which you can do with stakes into the ground and not going so high on a structure... The only thing that changes is the attitude of signal... For FM it won't work AS well... But for hitting skip on AM you will just have a tighter bounce...
