Default G1 Rings

I ordered thru one of our site supporters a new set of rings for the 1980 G1 Yamaha. It had been smoking bad and finally didn't have the compression to run. It held on long enough to get the carb and CDI straightened out.

I actually bought two sets of rings as I goofed putting the first set in and broke one. Duh. I was trying to be so careful too. Oh well, live and learn.

Thought I'd share the pics of the original rings and the broken one side by sid for wear comparison.

The cyl was just in spec for non-oversized according to some info I found via the search box. She runs like a champ now.

mh, is there a trick to installing the rings? I have a new crank/rod, seals, bearings and upper end. I don't want to order more engine parts because I broke something. Thanks!

For the rings, its' easier with 2 people sometimes.Make sure they are aligned with the pin in the groove, otherwise they won't compress properly.Use a Hose-Clamp to compress the rings, grab the upper-ring just enough to hold it,then lower the jug down,as the first ring starts to enter the bore, slightly loosen the clamp, push the jug down, then repeat for the second-ring.We build Early Triumphs, they are a Twin-Cylinder and share a jug,and stroke,so you have to do both at the same time!!Hose-Clamps are the best for this!!

I think he's talking about putting the rings on the piston itself Mike... Although, I may be wrong

Could be,If so..Take the ring, insert end in groove, then spin the ring around the piston, feeding it in as it rotates.Works slick,an old-school engine-builder taught me that one.

The guy that taught me,helped me on my first car engine.I had all the tools laid out, everything I would need.He picked up my ring-expanders and threw them away.He said "They stretch the rings, don't ever use em' " I left em' in the trash!

Thats exactly how I've done it but for some reason I was thinking these rings were particularly brittle and wouldn't install that way.
