Default Just got a g9 previos owner says needs top end rebuild. Many questions

Hello all,

I just picked up this g9 for $600. The previous owner said it needed a top end rebuild. I have been doing alot of research on here, but still have lots of questions. I started by checking some electrical as per the the "stickey" post. All checked out. The cart does nothing. I checked the oil. Not a drop in it That can't be good. I pulled the belts and found that with out the belts the starter would spin good. I tried to hand turn the engine shaft and had a lot of resistance. I have now pulled the engine from the cart. I pulled the head. The piston will move if I turn the shaft but there is alot of resistance. It seems like it is internal and not a ring problem. I am now at a stand still. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

My first Cart.

Thanks Tom

These engines are "Splash-Lube",they don't have oil-pressure,so as soon as the oil is low enough,it doesn't get thrown onto the rod and crank-bearings,then seizure sets inIt sounds like a complete teardown should be done to see how much damage was done.It could be mild(new rings,bearings,etc..,or you could need a rod and new crank-shaft,if yours isn't able to be turned.Tear it down, and post some pics.Hope this helps.

I plan on pulling the engine apart tomorrow to access the damage. I think at this point I have 3 options.

1. Full rebuild of the original engine
2. Clone with the predator 420 cc
3. Clone with a vanguard engine.

All input will be appreciated. I typically like to weigh all options both pros and cons. I will be doing all the work myself. I would like to get everything done for around $500.

Thanks Tom

I think the clone is the best option, hands down you have a brand new engine. If I had it to do over again I'd go for the clone myself. I easily could have bought the predator for what my engine parts cost to date.

Yep,and Harbor Freight just put out 15%,and 20% off coupons in this weeks fliers. That will save you about $55 or so on a 420 motor! That savings will pay for the clutch-adapter.

Clone is cheapest but more difficult to hook all the stuff up. I guess a v twin is not going to be much easier anyway. Cheapest I found a rebuild is 600+ at a dealer if you carry the engine in. Clone 420 is $300 engine, 50 adapter, build a mount, may need to buy a muffler/exhaust pipes/airbox/fittings and such depending how you do it. I spent over 100 to get my head cut and ported. I spent 60 to have Robertson TT make me a custom exhaust header with a slip fitting and 30 for the walker car muffler on it. 10 for a car airbox at the boneyard and about that for pvc fittings to pipe it, had to make linkage for throttle and choke, relay to kill ignition, etc. Whipping up a mount out of steel bar was the easy part lol. So I must have well over 500 into it but it will spin the 22s and managed to pull the front tires a little now, still with stock clutches.

Of course I wanted to do it before that, having twice the power is a pure riot to me. Still starts and runs like stock with the pedal, sounds like stock until you hammer it. If you are not worried about more power you can get the 390 clone and still have more power than stock, and save more cash yet. I managed to get my 420 from home depot online for 264 shipped last spring but they went up last I looked.

The only real issue with the clone is if you want elec start like a lawnmower, the clone only charges 3A the gen does 15A. So you need to keep the gen for charging, or fit a car alternator, or do without much charging. Some charge the battery every couple weeks and don't use lights/etc much. They say you can put a second coil in for 6A charge but not heard how it works. I kept the stock gen for starting and charging, so no problem for me to get cheaper recoil engine that has no charging at all.

Last thought is you might ask Geoff (posted in clones section) about his engines. He is getting a higher HP clone and says he may be able to get a clone v twin cheaper than other twins, like under $1K. However the vanguard twin for example you can mod with cams and all kinds of things for more power, as you can with the clone singles, just cost more money lol. Other engines mods are limited, have to find out what you can do if you plan on future things for it.
