Default Broken Bolt!

Tragedy has struck! Assembling my new motor and everything was going without problems until I started to torque the 7 bolts hoding the case halves together. These bolts are supposed to be torqued to only 5 lbs but when I got to #6 in the sequence it snapped. I did not notice prior damage or dirt of any kind but it still snapped. The cases seeem tight and well together and I hate tearing this apart again. Good to go or start over?

They may seem tight now but we both know once it heats up 2 or 3 times..it sucks but do it right the first time you will be glad later..

Steve. I know your putting a lot of time and money into this project and you haven't cut any corners so don't do it now. Tear it down and fix it. You will be a lot happier in the end. Just my two cents...

Had it apart before you guys could reply! I knew the right thing to do. On closer inspection I found that all the bolts were stretched from a previous assembly and much weaker. took the case to the machine shop to get the bolt out. Oh well.

Shribers Auto just called and the bolt is out! I almost made a terrible decision but something just wouldn't let me assemble it that way. Went to Lowes and bought new 6mm x 1.0 bolts and I'll have to shorten two of them for proper length. I'll assemble them with the blue thread locker and should be good to go. This day is trashed. Time for a shower and an alcoholic beverage or six Everybody agree with this plan?

Consider a parts store for some quality bolts.

Look at the number on the head of the bolts.Metrics use a number such as 8.8.This is the Grade, like SAE-Bolts(which use hash-marks).I would make sure they are 8.8,or 10.9.The higher the number, the stronger the bolt, and with alot of the hardware now,the higher-grade stuff is still lower-grade quality.Like others said,You went this far,why cut corners now.Hope this helps.

Gotcha guys, will do. These are not actually hex head bolts but phillips head. I was getting bolts etc from Fastenal but last time he wanted to sell me full packages and seemed unwilling to sell me what I wanted. Got to find a new source, maybe just order from Yamaha cause the local auto parts don't seem to carry much in stock. Thanks for all the replys

It may cost more, but try a Motorcycle/Atv dealer. They should have a Metric selection.
